Dartmouth alums in race get mixed results

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 -- In elections yesterday, results for Dartmouth alumni were mixed as Republicans battled Democrats for control of Congress and state houses across the nation.

First term Senator Slade Gorton, '49, R-Wash. and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, won reelection against Democratic challenger Ron Sims.

H. Carl McCall '58 became the first African-American to be elected to state-wide office in New York yesterday after being projected to win as state comptroller.

After an often nasty and heated campaign, McCall was predicted to beat Republican challenger Herbert London. With 72 percent of the precincts reporting at 12:15 am, McCall had a 52 percent to 46 percent lead.

Last year, the state legislature approved McCall, after he was tapped to fill the remaining two years of the term of Republican Edward Regan, who retired from the post.

Joel Hyatt '72, founder of a national low-income legal services firm, lost in his bid for the United States Senate.

In Ohio, with 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Republican Lieutenant Governor Mike DeWine had 53 percent of the vote while Hyatt received 39 percent.

Hyatt sought to replace his father-in-law Senator Howard Metzenbaum, D-Ohio, who is retiring.
