Insensitive Headlines

To the Editor:

Two recent headlines appearing on the front page of The Dartmouth warrant criticism for their insensitivity and inappropriateness.

The first headline, from Tuesday, Sept. 20, described the death of Computer Science Professor Donald Johnson with extreme abruptness: "Johnson, CS prof, dead."

This was followed on Thursday, Sept. 29, by the phrase "Brown '97 dead" to announce the death of a fellow Dartmouth student.

Whether the choice of headlines was based on space constraints or shock value to attract readers, these tragic events deserve more respect than allotted by The Dartmouth.

As members of the Dartmouth community, both Donald Johnson and Adam Brown were known to many. Their respective family and friends could only have been saddened further by The Dartmouth's callous treatment of their deaths.
