Aires to host Fall Fling

Fall brings the changing of seasons, the falling of leaves and, of course, the "doo wop's" and "didee, didee's" of Dartmouth's a cappella singing groups in the annual Fall Fling.

The Aires, the College's all male a cappella group, will host the Fall Fling concert. In addition to the Aires, the Dodecaphonics, campus co-ed singing group, and the Skidmore Accents, an all female group from Skidmore College in New York, will perform.

"We wanted an all female group, a co-ed group and then us," said Michael Roberts '96, the Aire's business manager.

"When they asked us to sing at the Fall Fling, I knew it would be a lot of work, but it's worth it," Daisy Alpert '95, musical director of the Dodecaphonics, said.

Roberts said a three group concert is ideal because with more than three groups, the performance "gets rather tedious and long."

The four major singing groups on campus the Aires, Decibelles, Dodecaphonics and Rockapellas- take turns hosting the Fall Fling and the other two seasonal, singing components - the Winter Whingding and the Spring Sing.

"It's traditional for the hosting group to invite one group from on campus and one from off campus. It's done fairly. The Decibelles didn't expect to be invited because we hosted the Spring Sing," said Jennifer McCullough '97, leader of the Decibelles.

The Fall Fling attracts a larger audience than the more intimate shows the groups hold around campus. Singers find both negative and positive aspects of performing for such a large audience.

Roberts said the big concerts are a lot of fun, but he enjoys the intimacy of smaller venues.

"There's more of an exchange with the audience" when performing in smaller groups, he said.

"I love to do the Spaulding shows," Alpert said. "The shows have a very professional feel to them and the pressure feels good too."

The Aires will be performing many new songs, but Roberts said they were all top secret.

Alpert said the Dodecs are performing a mix of old and new. with a featured song by Smashing Pupkins.

The Fall Fling takes place on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Spaulding Auditorium at 8 p.m. The price of admission is $7 for general admission, $4 for Dartmouth graduate students and $2 for undergraduates.
