Tubestock founded by 'outsiders'

To the Editor:

I would like to shed a little wisdom on your Tubestock article of July 26 ("Student injured at Tubestock").

I am a local resident who has attended every Tubestock since 1987. I can remember when WFRD-FM was the "community station," chariot races, dragon-shaped Winter Carnival statues a person could slide down as fire shot from the dragon's mouth.

More importantly, I can remember when everyone with a 03755 zip code was a local, not an "outsider" as quoted by College Proctor Bob McEwen.

First off, Tubestock is not a "Dartmouth function." It was the creation of Rich "Boomer" Ackerboom '80 and "outsiders," mainly Don Perkins and bandmates who rehearsed in Boomer's basement.

As years went by, other local band joined the festivities. All of these bands played for free, to unite their friends at this new and unusual party.

Secondly, the College took a lot of heat two years ago when parents' weekend fell on the same day as Tubestock. There was a campus uproar that the College will date simu-schedule the two functions.

The Student Activities office ran a published statement that Tubestock is an unsanctioned party and not related to the College. And now we are "outsiders" at an event begun by us?

Mr. McEwen, please choose your words more carefully, so as not to offend the locals. Tubestock is for everyone who can float, splash and laugh.

Hopefully, next year, Tubestock will be without territorial claims and will be a reunion for all who live here.
