No speaker announced

Less than six weeks away from Commencement, the College has yet to announce the Commencement speaker.

Commencement ceremonies will take place Sunday, June 12.

The speaker is chosen each year by the Council on Honorary Degrees. The council also names the honorary degree recipients.

Cheryl Reynolds, a member of the Commencement Committee and secretary to the Board of Trustees, said the Commencement speaker should be announced within the next two weeks but would not say why an announcement has not yet been made.

The Dartmouth announced last year's Commencement speaker, veteran television journalist Bill Moyers, on Feb. 22.

In 1992 the College announced on April 9 that Oscar Arias Sanchez, former president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner, would give the Commencement address. In 1991, the announcement that Elizabeth Dole would give the speech came on April 21.

Harvard University announced on April 5 that Vice President Al Gore will give its commencement address on June 9. Robert Sargent Shriver, founder of the Peace Corps, was announced as Yale University's speaker on April 17.

"Dartmouth has always held [the name of the Commencement speaker] to the very last minute," College Spokesman Alex Huppe said. "This is more typical than unusual."

"If President Freedman hasn't told me by June 1 then I'll start to be concerned," he said.
