Men's tennis falls to Princeton, but rebounds to defeat Navy

The men's tennis team overcame a disappointing 5-2 loss to Princeton University Friday to punish Navy with a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon at home.

"Princeton simply outplayed us," Holden Spaht '96 said. "They were pretty fired up to beat us since we won their place (in the NCAA regional) last year."

Spaht, along with Dan Coakley '94, Jim Rich '96 and Chase Arnold '95, captured singles victories against Army after the Green opened the match by taking the doubles point.

Coakley, who moved his record to 5-0, added one of the points against Princeton, while Randy White '94 added the second one with a singles victory.

The loss against Princeton will effect the Big Green's chances for a bid in the NCAA regional this year.

But a win in tomorrow's match against West Virginia could help the Big Green overcome the obstacle they now face.

Following two tough weekend matches the Green will have only one day to prepare for the usually strong West Virginia team.

"With only one day of practice to prepare, the most important thing is that we get mentally ready to play another tough match," Spaht said. "West Virginia has a lot of big, strong guys who like to serve and volley, so I imagine our practice will be geared toward how to play against their aggressive style."

The West Virginia match will be played at 3:00 p.m. at the Topliff tennis courts (or the Leverone Field House in the case of inclement weather.)
