The Dartmouth men's track team fell to 1-1 on the season with a second place finish this Saturday at Leverone Field House.
The three-way meet was dominated by the University of Connecticut, who scored 105 points. Dartmouth scored 55 to place ahead of the University of Vermont's 21 points.
Once again, the Big Green turned in outstanding individual performances.
Adam Nelson '97 broke the school shot-put record that he set last weekend at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. Nelson's toss of 57-10 was good for a first place finish.
Seniors Derek West and Dan Heinold also won their events. Heinhold won the pole vault, while West placed first in the 3000 meter race.
"I think we're coming along well," West said. "Connecticut is probably the best team in the east. We should have made it closer but I'm still happy about the way we finished."
Dave Erickson '96 came in first in the weight throw. Classmate Aaron Culliney won the 500 meter race.
The women's track team traveled south to the University of Rhode Island for a seven team meet this past Saturday.
Matched up against perrenial favorites, Rhode Island and the University of Connecticut, the team captured a hard fought fourth place finish.
The meet was highlighted by a series of personal bests for Dartmouth.
"Everything is going well," Kristin Manwearing '96 said. "People want good individual performances going into the heptagonal championships in a few weeks."
The Big Green's two mile relay team qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships with a personal best of 9:20. Their second place finish was made possible by freshman Heather Warley's 2:20 split. Warley had just come off an injury and had only a single practice before setting her personal record.
"Heather was amazing," co-captain Candice Shoemaker '94 said. "To run her fastest time after being injured impressed a lot of us."
Standout Kristen Cobb '95 ran a personal best in the mile with a time of 4:53.8. Freshman Calin Nelson '97 had an individual best in the 3000 meter run coming in at 10:11. Jessica Neyman '96 set a personal best in the 1000 meter race with a time of 3:03.
Both teams will be competing this weekend in Winter Carnival competition at Leverone Field House.
