Women's hockey splits weekend games

The women's hockey team suffered a disturbing fall from the high of having beaten the country's number one team, losing to key Eastern College Athletic Conference rival Princeton 2-1 Saturday.

The Big Green recovered on Sunday with an easy 8-1 trampling of Yale to push their record to 5-4-1 overall.

Still, the loss to Princeton was a considerable setback in the team's bid to defend its Ivy League title.

The game was a battle to the final moments, but those final moments belonged to the Tigers, who banged the game-winning goal into the net in the final minute of play to beat Dartmouth for the first time in two years.

Malaika Little '97 scored Dartmouth's lone goal midway through the second period.

"I think we let down a little at the end," Coach George Crowe said. "But it was just one of those games that could have gone either way."

The Green bounced back on Sunday to hand Yale its 26th loss in their last 28 meetings. Gretchen Ulion '94 started it off with a goal less than a minute into the game, on route to a hat trick for the day. Sarah Devens '96 and Phoebe Manchester '96 each contributed a pair of goals to the Dartmouth effort.

Yale showed a sudden sign of energy, scoring in the beginning of the second period, but it was not enough to fend off the persistent shots by the Dartmouth women.

The Big Green didn't quit even with a considerable lead on Sunday. Dartmouth continued to fire at the Yale keeper until the end, scoring twice with a two person disadvantage.

Even with the loss to Princeton, Coach Crowe is setting his sights high for the rest of the season. "We look to make the ECAC playoffs every year, and I feel very confident that we can still do it," he said.
