Records set at Relays

Last weekend Dartmouth christened its new track in Leverone Field House with a bang, hosting the 25th annual Dartmouth Relays, a series of track and field events at masters, high school, college and open levels. Two record-shattering performances highlighted the event. Liz Legault of the Boston Athletics Association scored a mark of 16.71 in the 20 lb. weight division and Jerome Young finished the boys' high school 400-meter race in 48.49 seconds.

The Big Green, in their first meet of the indoor season, saw fine performances across the board. In the developmental mile run, Mike Rigney '96 and Bill Thibault '94 scored seventh and eighth places, respectively, while Jessica Neyman '96 came in eighth in the women's developmental mile.

In the championship 800-meter race, Aaron Culliney '96 came in second, while Brian Barry '96, Geoff Zawtocki '94 and Tim Farrell '96 garnered second, third and fourth places, respectively, in the developmental race.

In the 5,000-meter run, cross country standouts Kristin Cobb '95 and Maribel Sanchez '96 came in second and third. In the men's 5,000-meter race, Dartmouth Medical School student Seth McClennen came in second, with Aaron Bouplon '95 and Bill Beiner '95 close behind in third and seventh places, respectively.

The men's cross country team was also represented by Ted FitzPatrick '95, who ran to a second place finish in the 3,000-meter run.

Dartmouth's freshmen showed promise, as evidenced by Eric Szegda's seventh place finish in the 55-meter dash, Wayne Burwell's fourth place in the 400m and Cailin Nelson's second place in the 3,000m.

The Big Green continued their success in the field events. Co-captain Candi Shoemaker '94 finished eighth in the 20lb. weight division and Dave Erikson '96 placed fourth in the 35lb. weight division.

Shoemaker also placed third in the shot put, behind teammate Amy Winchester '96, the defending Heptagonal champion, who came in second.

Adam Nelson '97 and Co-captain Kurt Cohen '94 achieved second and fourth place finishes, respectively, in the shot put.

"My performance in the weight wasn't what I expected it should be," Shoemaker said, "but it's just a matter of more competition and better timing. I'm very happy with the shot put, though."

Beth Parento '94 leapt to a ninth place mark in the long jump and Steve Clark '97 placed third in the high jump, while Dan Heinold '94 scaled to a third place mark in the pole vault.
