Men's swim team shaping up

In its past two meets, the men's swim team showed encouraging signs of improvement with a pair of strong performances against the University of Massachusetts and the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn blasted Dartmouth 146-84 in Philadelphia on Saturday, while UMass escaped with a 156-138 win last Wednesday in Karl Michaels Pool.

The team had a brave performance against a very strong Penn team with some outstanding individual performances.

A win for the 200-meter medley relay team of Pete Moore '94, Ben Lannon '96, Jason Stern '94 and Matt Carlson '94 gave the Big Green a strong start. Other impressive performances came from Nick Gansner '97 in the 200-meter breaststroke, Zev Starr-Tambore '97 in the mile race and Carlson in the 200-meter backstroke.

Stern, the team's co-captain, said the meet against the UMass last Wednesday was the most emotionally encouraging meet of the season.

Although the Big Green came just short of a victory, the meet was decided by the last relay, and many swimmers had their best unshaved times of the season.

Among the most outstanding performances were Stern's victory in the 200-meter freestyle and Moore's wins in the 50- and 100-meter freestyles.

Jeremy Turk '97, a new diver for the team, also came away with a surprising first-place finish in the diving competition.

The men's next meet is this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at home against Columbia University.
