Men's hockey splits games

The Big Green men's hockey team crushed the Catamounts in front of a 3,914-spectator home crowd on Saturday night, dealing a huge 11-4 defeat to University of Vermont.

Scott Fraser '94 scored three goals for a hat trick and goalie Ben Heller '97 made 26 stops in his first Eastern College Athletic Conference showing as the Big Green avenged their 7-3 loss at UVM on Friday night.

The Big Green, 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the ECAC, capitalized on four of seven power play opportunities, making the most of UVM's mistakes.

"It was great to beat them, because they embarrassed us in their barn Friday night. So, we really took it to them," said Brent Retter '97, the left-winger who opened the scoring at 1:05 of the first period in his first of two goals during the game.

UVM, 1-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the ECAC, played musical goalies as the Big Green's onslaught mounted.

The Big Green's second goal came courtesy of defenseman Dax Burkhart '96 24 seconds later.

"UVM is just a home team," Burkhart said. "There probably one of the best in home teams in the league, just because of their crowd. Here, we could take them."

After conceding five goals by the third minute of the second period, UVM replaced starting goalie Tim Thomas with Tom Vukota.

Vukota played 20-minutes before being pulled for the final 13 minutes after stopping eight of 11 shots.

At this point, the score was 8-3, and the Green would score three more on the final installment of the hapless UVM trinity before the end of the game.
