Football coach injured at Columbia

NEW YORK, Nov. 6 -- At the tail-end of a play during the football game here, a Columbia player barreled into Big Green assistant coach Drew Tallman on the sidelines, bruising the cartilage between his ribs.

Tallman, a volunteer tight end coach, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for examination. He was later released.

His wife said he was fine but the bruises on his chest make breathing painful.

The injury came at the end of a punt-return when a Dartmouth player, trying to get back on the field after a Columbia player blocked him out of bounds, knocked Tallman on the ground.

Tallman lay on the ground in the fetal position on his side for 10 minutes without movement. He was taken off the field on a stretcher after he regained some movement in the fingers.

Tallman was the team's assistant coach from 1971 to 1975 but returned this year to coach the Big Green.
