Morgan, v-p emeritus, dead at 71

Rodney Augstelle Morgan '44, vice-president of administration emeritus for the College, died Saturday night of a brain tumor in his home in Etna, N.H., friends said. He was 71.

Morgan had an operation a year ago to remove a previous brain tumor.

He served for a decade as vice-president for administration under the late President John Kemeny, from 1972 to 1982.

Morgan was in charge of personnel, planning, Buildings and Grounds, Dartmouth Dining Services, the Hanover Inn, the Dartmouth Skiway and the College's golf course.

Morgan helped to rebuild the golf course and was a big supporter of the College Skiway, said Fritz Hier '44, a close friend and classmate of Morgan.

Under Morgan's direction, the Hanover Inn became a profitable company after years of losses.

"He a was very consciences and gracious person," former Director of the News Service Robert Graham, who worked with Morgan. "He brought to that office a great deal of tact and sensitivity."

Originally from East Aurora, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo, N.Y., Morgan was graduated from East Aurora High School and then matriculated at Dartmouth.

Morgan graduated from the College in 1944 with a bachelor's degree of science in engineering and then graduated from Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Thayer School of Engineering, both in 1945.

A "marvelous athlete," Morgan played on the College's golf team as an undergraduate and was an avid skier, Hier said.

Morgan served in the Navy for two years in the Pacific during World War II as a lieutenant junior grade in engineering.

Morgan returned to Dartmouth in 1972 because he "liked the school and loved the country," Hier said.

Morgan left the College in 1982 to work for the Hanover-based American-Canadian Bridge Company. He retired in 1985.

Morgan is survived by his wife, June Samuels Morgan and his twin brother, Richard A. Morgan '44 of Buffalo, and also by his three children, Rodney A. Morgan, Jr. '71 of West Hartford, Conn., Paula Wyman of Arlington, Va. and Amy Morgan of East Aurora.
