Top faculty deans step down

Two top deans of the faculty will step down this summer after completing four-year terms.

Bruce Duncan, the associate dean of the faculty for the humanities, and David Lindgren, who is the associate dean for the social sciences, are in charge of hiring and promoting professors in their divisions and determining how much money each department should receive.

Duncan will hand over his post to Professor Mary Jean Green, who is currently the chair of the French and Italian Department. Lindgren will be replaced by George Wolford, chair of the Psychology Department. Associate deans are always senior faculty members who have administrative experience.

Wolford will take over the associate dean's position on July 1 and Green will take her post on July 19.

Dean of the Faculty James Wright is responsible for selecting the associate deans. Department chairs and professors recommend candidates to Wright, who has his eye on choosing someone who "he can work comfortably with and who has the respect of the faculty," Lindgren said.

Associate deans serve for four years. They teach a minimum of one course each year.

Before being promoted to associate dean, Duncan taught German at the College for 20 years. Lindgren has been a professor in the geography department since 1966.

Both Duncan and Lindgren will take a one-year sabbatical and then resume teaching for the 1994-1995 academic year.

Duncan said the year-long sabbatical is a transition period to help ease the deans "into the swing of teaching and research."

Duncan and Lindgren both said they were very pleased with the appointments of Green and Wolford. Lindgren called Wolford his "first choice to be successor."

Lindgren said that although he taught during his term as associate dean, he looks forward to having more time to interact and meet with students.

Lynn Higgins will take over for Green as chair of the French and Italian department and Robert Kleck will become the chair of the Psychology Department.
