Equestrian team finishes third at last meet of season

Even though Dartmouth's varsity equestrian team placed consistently third or fourth throughout the season, individual riders' rounds have jumped into higher places in the last two shows. At the beginning of the season, the team scored few high places at each competition, but the vans heading back to Hanover from the shows at Boston University and the University of New Hampshire were full of blue, red and yellow ribbons. Five of the 26 riders at BU placed first in their divisions, six second and five third while nine of the 15 riders at UNH scored in the top three spots. "We started a little slow but I think we ended up really strong," co-captain Christine Sandvik '97 said.

Sorority rush reveals a few flaws

The revamped sorority rush process designed last year with a double goal of offering all rushees a bid and strengthening houses had only partial success when the formal process came to a close Tuesday night. "The main goals we had in mind were to give every woman who wanted to be a part of the system a chance to be and to make sure each house is as strong as possible," Panhellenic Council President Melissa Trumbull '95 said in an April 14 interview with The Dartmouth.

Drills, inspections to enforce fire safety

In an effort to prevent fires in residence buildings and to insure students are aware of health codes and exiting drills, the Office of Residential Operations will conduct fire safety inspections this week in all dormitories, special affinity houses and Greek houses. Director of Operations Woody Eckels said a fire in August in Lord Hall demonstrated the need for the fire safety week because it caused about $8,000 in damages and six to eight people remained asleep in the building despite alarms.

Welcomed by Dartmouth's wild side

Most students arriving at an elite Ivy League institution for the first day of college expect to be greeted by advisers with books, maps and maybe a beer - not Tweedledee, Mickey Mouse and a cow. "It's not what I expected," Scott Rankin '98 said from his dorm room in the Fayerweather farm.

DaGlo responds to ROTC decision

The Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Organization issued a statement Tuesday night condemning the Board of Trustees' decision to continue the College's ROTC program and calling for it to follow through on promises to pressure the military to change its policy on homosexuals. The statement reiterates sentiments brought up in Monday's rally to protest the Trustees' decision to keep the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, a program many say violates the College's nondiscrimination policy. "This decision comes as an insult and an outrage to gay, lesbian and bisexual students ... The Equal Opportunity Policy does not have exceptions; discrimination is unacceptable regardless of circumstances," DaGlo members wrote. The statement claims the Trustees' decision sends "a message to all gay, lesbian and bisexual students that their rights are less important than alumni donations." It urges the Trustees to fight the military's current "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which they agree is discriminatory. DaGlo Co-chair Trevor Burgess '94 stated in a BlitzMail message last night that both DaGlo and the Coalition for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Concerns will work "closely with senior administrators in the near future to encourage positive change." "DaGLO and [the coalition] are working closely together to turn this very negative event into a positive for gays and lesbians," Burgess wrote. The statement was sent to The Dartmouth and several senior-level administrators, including College President James Freedman, Dean of the College Lee Pelton and interim Provost Bruce Pipes, and will be sent to the Board.
