Patriarchal Head Games

While I agree with Liza Williams' main point regarding the externality of binary service-based relationships as a hindrance to the overarching objective of equi-personal concomitant sexual relationships ("Sex, Solicitation and Sororities," The Dartmouth, October 26), I believe it is incumbent upon us to delve further into her conception of the nurturance of masculinist gratification rituals cast in the sorority "framework." Clearly it is not a point of anisotropic indifference that feminine "performance" from the fellatory perspective as judged by an omnipartial male "audience" (as it were) is a hampering factor toward the concomitance of relationships; indeed it has been instrumental in bringing untold numbers of otherwise flourishing partnerships to their knees. The "objective disorder" in Williams' thinking, however, is the fallacious notion that relationships constructed on a quid pro quo oral paradigm are therefore paradigmatically unsound -- or, to put it more succinctly, that they fail to pass a "global test" of paradigmatic functionality while instead perpetuating the trope of vicissitudinal subservience in the more female of the two partners.

Diversity According to Wright

To the Editor: "Dartmouth needs to be a place where arguments and assumptions and conclusions are tested and, then, tested some more." In his convocation address, President Wright encouraged students to seek out media that challenges our views rather than reinforces them.

"Tasteful" Pornography?

To the Editor: Welton Chang ("Putting Pornography in Context," May 19) writes, "Pornography as depicted in magazines such as Playboy can be done in tasteful ways." It's good to know that there are "tasteful" ways to objectify a woman!

In Defense of Masters and Slaves

As I am sure all of you know, in late 2003 Los Angeles County officials declared unacceptable the current labeling of primary and secondary interoperable electronics components, most notably computer hard drives, as "master" and "slave" devices. Officials made the formal request to suppliers in response to a complaint filed by a worker after he saw the terms printed on video recording equipment and informed the Office of Affirmative Action Compliance. The terms were then officially deemed offensive, despite the cries of manufacturers eager to maintain the industry-standard labels, as well as those of vociferous free speech proponents. Well, it bears mentioning that this is not a case of freedom of speech.

Easter Eggs and Ramadan Hats

The bunny is an idol. There, I've said it. The patron hare of sweet-to-eat has usurped the highest holy day on the Christian calendar and demoted its billion-plus practitioners to mere subsidiaries of M&M Mars, Inc. While some Christians still cling desperately to ideals and advance feeble apologetics ("The egg is a symbol of new life; it's how chickens are born again!"), I think even the theologically comatose will agree that there exists a chasm of vacuity between "Son of the Living God is raised victorious over the forces of evil and death, in the process saving mankind from the certain damnation of his sinful nature" and "anthropoid lagomorph traipses gaily about leaving candy and pastel eggs in difficult-to-reach places." Why has the bunny triumphed?

Gay Marriage

To the Editor: News for John Olsen '05 ("Tyranny of the Majority," March 29): not being able to marry a person of the same sex doesn't mean you are a second-class citizen.
