Meningitis often strikes colleges

Spinal meningitis, a potentially-deadly infection that often strikes on college campuses and recently appeared at Dartmouth, is an inflammation of the membrane around the brain and the spinal cord that is transmitted through droplets in the air. Slade Ellis '98 is currently in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in serious condition with spinal meningitis. The two main types of meningitis are viral and bacterial. The viral strain is short-lived and usually benign, but bacterial meningitis can be fatal if not quickly treated with antibiotics.

Sewing seeds for permanent garden

Within the next two weeks, Jim Hourdequin '97 will present the College with a proposal that could elevate the Dartmouth Organic Garden from a marginally successful club to a self-sufficient, permanent program. The Garden will require $50,000 of initial College funding to hire a farm manager, purchase necessary materials and build two greenhouses. "If students are behind this, it's going to happen for sure.

Vigil honors victims of domestic abuse

A group of more than 50 Dartmouth administrators, Hanover residents, professors and students participated in a Speak-Out/Vigil against domestic violence on the Green last night. People showed their support for the cause through personal stories, readings and song within a circle of candles on the Green, representing a space safe from abuse. The Speak-Out/Vigil was the culmination of the Women's Resource Center's Domestic Violence Awareness Week programming.
