Big Green sailing takes fourth overall at Schell Regatta

The Dartmouth sailing team experienced a wintry mix of weather and results this weekend down on the Charles River, dominating the 64th Erwin Schell Trophy at MIT and getting snowed off the line at Harvard in the Women's Victorian Urn Trophy. Once again the tremendously trusty team of Erik Storck '07 and Killarney Loufek '07 subjugated the competition this weekend.

Volleyball comes up empty in weekend homestand

The Dartmouth volleyball team ended its homestand with disappointment this weekend. The four-match stretch began last weekend with a strong showing, taking a game against league-leading Cornell and sweeping Columbia to put the Big Green in position to make progress in the Ivy League standings.

Women's hockey opens with a win

Shannon Bowman '09 began her Dartmouth hockey career with a pair of goals as the women's team managed to hang on and win its home opener 4-3 against an opportunistic Boston University squad. Dartmouth dominated play for most of the game, as evidenced by their overwhelming 44-13 shots on goal margin, but the Terriers perservered, and, with a couple of third-period goals, made the last couple of minutes of the third period very interesting. Showing no signs of first-period home-opener jitters, the Big Green jumped on BU from the opening whistle, firing three shots on goal in the first four minutes. Despite controlling the puck in the offensive zone almost continually to begin the game, Dartmouth nearly fell behind 1-0.

Women's soccer wins, claims first in the Ivy League

The Dartmouth women's soccer team traveled to Cambridge Saturday to face off against Harvard as part of its chase for first place in the Ivy League. Everything fell Dartmouth's way and with a 1-0 win over Harvard and a loss by Yale at the hands of Columbia, the Big Green claimed the top spot in the Ivy League and improved to 11-3-1 (4-1 Ivy). The win, besides catapulting Dartmouth past Yale into first place, was the team's fourth straight shutout and the team has gone unbeaten in its last six matches. Christina Ferraris '06 tallied the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute, giving Dartmouth all it needed for the win.

Men's soccer defeats Harvard in a 2-1 road thriller

In what has been the best week of his collegiate career, Darnell Nance '06 scored the game-winning goal with only 2:28 left on the clock to give Dartmouth men's soccer a vital 2-1 win away to Harvard. The win keeps the Big Green in close pursuit of the Ivy League title, as the defending champions are currently in second with 12 points, three behind No.

Sailing shows well in R.I., Conn.

Following in step with the rest of the Big Green sports brigade, this weekend was once again successful for the Dartmouth sailing team. The coed team showed their mettle at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy, taking A-division by storm while the women's team found itself ranked second nationally after qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Championships at Connecticut College. The indomitable team of Erik Storck '07 and Killarney Loufek '07 sailed past the competition this weekend at Brown and the Hoyt Trophy, winning A-division in this weekend's Intersectional Regatta by 11 points. Most regattas come down to the wire, with victors being decided by one to two points or even tie-breakers; a team that is consistently triumphant by such a wide margin is rare indeed, especially when competing in 13 races in a fleet composed of 18 dominate teams from around the nation. Sailors Ben Sampson '08 and Christina Duncan '06 had a little more trouble with this weekend's cold, rainy winds, but still posted a respectable eigth place in B-division, earning Dartmouth an overall finishing spot of third place, just one point behind second-place finisher Yale and seven points behind the Coed National Rankings leader, Boston College. The Dartmouth women faired equally well in the Stu Nelson Regatta at Connecticut College, finishing in third place and earning a spot in the Atlantic Coast Championships at Coast Guard in November.
