Big Green Weekend Primer

This weekend is arguably the biggest of the year for Dartmouth athletics, rivaling last spring’s baseball and softball Ivy League Championship Series weekend. Four teams -— football, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country — will compete for a chance at Ivy League titles this weekend, while women’s soccer and field hockey look to play their way back into the conversation. Saturday will be enormous, with 16 of Dartmouth’s 34 varsity teams taking the field. Here are a few of our picks for the weekend.

Cross country prepares for Heps

This Saturday, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in Princeton, New Jersey for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship. The women’s team will try to defend its title from last season, Dartmouth’s first since a four-peat that ended in 1997. The men’s side looks to claim its first championship since 2005.

Any Given Thursday

One of our favorite sportswriters is ESPN’s Bill Simmons, who loves to host guests on his podcasts. Since this is a great way to introduce new perspectives and keep things interesting, we’re following his lead and bringing in our first guest author, Tyler Fisher ’17. If this article turns out to be any good, he won’t be our last. We picked Tyler because a nickname of his is “Fish,” which we thought was a nice touch. He doesn’t get that joke, but we’re going to leave it in here anyway.

Crew teams compete at Princeton Chase

Dartmouth’s three crew teams competed in the three-mile Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie over the weekend, with the men’s lightweight first varsity eight finishing sixth. After a disappointing outing at the Head of the Charles earlier this month, the women’s first eight rebounded with a better finish, coming in 13th of 50 boats.

3-1 loss drops field hockey out of first

The field hockey team lost a crucial league game to Columbia University in its Sunday matchup and fell out of a tie for first place in the Ivy League. The Big Green (5-9, 3-2 Ivy) let up three goals in the first half and failed to equalize in the second despite shutting the Lions (11-4, 4-1 Ivy) out in the final frame.\n Dartmouth dropped to fourth place in the league, behind Columbia, Cornell University and Princeton University, who have 4-1 records in the Ancient Eight. The win extended the Lions’ win streak to five.

Football moves to 3-0 in Ivy with 27-7 win

After emerging victorious from its own homecoming game last weekend, the Dartmouth football team took home another homecoming win on Saturday, spoiling the weekend for Columbia University. The Big Green (5-1, 3-0 Ivy) surrendered only one touchdown to the Lions (0-6, 0-3 Ivy) and finished with a 27-7 win that was rarely in doubt. Despite being 3-0 in Ivy League play for the first time since 1997, the game marked the first time all season that the Big Green outgained an opponent in total offensive yards -— topping the Lions 432-326 — and the team’s first four-game win streak since 2003.

Women’s soccer to 2-0-3 Ivy with 1-0 win

Dartmouth’s road trip to New York, which will continue Monday against Marist College, began in victory Saturday with a 1-0 triumph over Columbia University. Tasha Wilkins ’15 drove a free kick that muscled its way into the net to give Dartmouth the lead in the 19th minute, and the Big Green never let the lead slip away.

Women’s hockey skates to 6-2 win vs. UNH

The women’s ice hockey team notched an impressive win in its first game of the season Sunday, beating the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 6-2 at Thompson Arena. The Big Green’s (1-0-0) top line of Kennedy Ottenbreit ’17, Laura Stacey ’16 and Lindsey Allen ’16 earned nine points on the afternoon.

With 1-0 win, men’s soccer surges to lead league

After dropping back-to-back games last week, the men’s soccer team regained momentum with a win over Columbia University, 1-0 in overtime at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Saturday. Not only did this victory avenge the Big Green’s (8-4-1, 3-1 Ivy) 2013 loss to the Lions (5-6-1, 1-2-1 Ivy), it also places Dartmouth atop the Ivy League standings.

The men’s soccer team travels to New York Saturday to face Columbia University, where they hope to get off the schneid and back into the win column. After reeling off five wins in a row, the Big Green (7-4-1, 2-1-0) has lost two straight and only scored one goal per game. During the previous streak, the team netted 13 goals.

Dunn named rugby All-American

Yejadai Dunn ’16 wasn’t even the first person to find out that she was named second team All-American, Dartmouth’s first women’s rugby All-American since Kirsten Ahrendt ’07 was named to the first team seven years ago. “I didn’t know about the award until some person I knew faintly from rugby texted me, and I was like, ‘What?’” Dunn said.

Danilack brothers team up in Big Green soccer resurgence

A pair of brothers have been crucial in the men’s soccer team’s resurgent 2014 campaign. Co-captain Hugh Danilack ’15 and Matt Danilack ’18 both found soccer at a young age and began playing early in elementary school, eventually joining recreation leagues. As their talent deepened, they moved onto travel teams. The brothers are on parallel tracks this season. The elder Danilack has scored eight points and the younger brother is right behind with seven, including three goals. Each notched his first collegiate goal within 15 minutes of the other against the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in late September.

Volleyball splits two Ivy games over Homecoming weekend

The women’s volleyball team split its two games over the weekend, beating Princeton University in a five-setter on Friday before falling to the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. The Big Green followed up its impressive win over the Tigers with an error-filled game against a Quakers squad playing its best volleyball of the season. After the weekend at home, the Big Green (13-5, 4-3 Ivy) now takes to the road for five straight Ivy League away matches.

Crew teams take on fierce competition at Head of the Charles

The men’s and women’s championship eight boats finished 26th at the 50th annual Head of the Charles Regatta over the weekend, marking a fall from last season when the men placed 25th and the women finished 20th. Held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Head of the Charles Regatta was the first of the season for the Big Green, serving as a litmus test for what the teams can expect going forward. The crew teams are only slated to compete in a few regattas in the fall before the season begins in earnest in the spring.
