Kenneth Starr, the former solicitor general famous for his investigation of the Whitewater land deal and former President Bill Clinton's extramarital affair with Monica Lewinsky, was named the 14th President of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, according to The New York Times. R. Dary Stone, head of the board of regents at the Baptist-affiliate research university, cited Starr's dedication to Christian ideals and his experience in public service as reasons for Starr's selection in a press release. Starr has served as dean of the Pepperdine University law school in Malibu, Calif. since 2004 and will assume his post at Baylor in June, The Times reported.

From imported sand to snazzy lingerie, Greek houses have planned a variety of diverse attractions to attract Webster Avenue-bound students during Winter Carnival. While some houses will offer their standard fare such as dance parties at Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity and Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity others will feature live bands such as BALLYHOO!, Vega and Dartmouth's Clusterfunk.

Two medical teams, formed as part of an alliance between Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Partners In Health, are now treating survivors in hospitals in the disaster-stricken country. Students have also stepped up their efforts by planning events to support such medical efforts financially and to educate the Dartmouth community about Haiti.

The Hanover Fire Department received the first alarm at 5:27 a.m., Hanover Fire Department Captain Mike Gilbert said in an interview with The Dartmouth. All fraternity members living in the building were immediately evacuated, and no one suffered any injuries, according to Roland Adams, Dartmouth's director of media relations.

Masters had a chronic autoimmune disorder that College President Jim Yong Kim said in a campus-wide e-mail Monday afternoon was the "underlying cause" of his death.

"After September 11, there was a lot of discussion of what it meant to be patriotic," Dartmouth government professor Michelle Clarke, who helped organize the conference, said in an interview with The Dartmouth. "The question that wasn't being asked is whether or not patriotism was valuable at all, and whether or not we should try to be patriotic in the first place. The purpose of the conference was to air some of those concerns."

McQueen, a door-to-door salesperson for an entry-level management training program in St. Louis, Mo., is one of many members of the Class of 2009 who have pursued unexpected careers in light of the financial crisis.

Dartmouth was ranked ninth in Kiplinger's 2009-2010 Best Values in Private Colleges list, which took into account the College's academic standards and need-based financial aid program. The list currently available online identifies the top 100 colleges that provide a quality education at an affordable price. The California Institute of Technology tops the list, with Princeton University coming in second and Yale University ranking third. Kiplinger considers an institution's ability to attract and retain intelligent students because of high-quality academics, according to an article accompanying the ranking. Colleges and universities are also ranked based on tuition, the types of financial aid offered and the percentage of students receiving aid, according to Kiplinger.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act last month, which extends the government's direct lending and discontinues the present program that includes government subsidies and loan guarantees for private lenders, The Times reported. If the bill passes in the Senate, colleges will be required to switch to the federal Direct Loan Program by July 1, 2010 a move most institutions are not prepared for, according to The Times.
