After a season of dealing with key injuries, a stubbornly frozen lake and an annoying-yet-adorable newspaper correspondent, the Dartmouth sailing team is finally reaping its rewards, and deservedly so. After the success of the Women's New England Championship two weekends ago at Boston University, in which the lady sailors earned a bid to their big event, the team sailors were in action Saturday and Sunday at their very own, recently-unfrozen Lake Mascoma.

At the President's Trophy hosted by Boston University, A-division divas Lauren Padilla '05 and Liz Hyon '05 placed a high second. Another big performance at the 2-spot in B-division by Emily East '06 and Amo Loring '04 put Dartmouth ahead overall.

Although recently it seems as though the Dartmouth Sailing Team could hold a regatta on certain patches of the Green, the co-ed sailors opted to return to the southern comfort of Charleston, S.C., for just their second taste of competition since the fall.

The first signs of sun and warmer temperatures have brought some good beginnings to the Dartmouth College sailing team. Former coach and alumnus Arthur E. Allen '32 is engaged to marry a lovely 85-year-old this week in Hanover. Another former coach, Peter Spaulding, is coming off a win in the U.S. Olympic sailing trials with teammate Tim Wadlow, and plans to represent the United States at Athens.

It has been said that Mother Nature can be especially tricky in New England. Who can disagree after we were briefly teased with sunshine and a dry, somewhat grassy Green, only to have a foot of snow dumped on us in recent days? As we fought to keep our shoes dry over the weekend here in Hanover, the Dartmouth Sailing team warded off impending pneumonia while racing beautifully in the harshest of conditions this past weekend.
