Sailors look to championships

With important championship and qualifying regattas looming in the coming weeks, the Dartmouth sailing team entered this past weekend with an even more serious and determined mindset than usual in order to get prepared for these big events.

The Admiral's Cup at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy greeted the sailors with warm weather, although there was nothing friendly about the 18-team field of competition. A-division crews Christina Duncan '05 and Jimmy Attridge '07 split duties with skipper Peter Fleming '05 for a 10th place finish.

In the B-division, Attridge again assisted at crew, this time with Clementine James '05. Along with Erik Storck '07, this group finished fourth.

Finally, Mike Wilde '07 placed second in C-division, which was enough to propel Dartmouth to a third-place overall finish. As an added bonus to the final third place spot, Dartmouth beat top-ranked Georgetown in the regatta.

From a third place in co-ed racing, we move to the women's regatta of weekend, which also resulted in a third place finish. The Dellenbaugh Trophy, hosted by Brown University, was highlighted by beautiful weather and shifty but robust winds.

Lauren Padilla '05 and Liz Hyon '05 sailed to sixth in A-division while Emily East '06 and Amo Loring '04 came in second in B-division. Yale University won the event, narrowly beating out the College of Charleston, who took second.

In other action this past weekend, the Big Green sailors placed ninth of 17 teams at the BU Trophy at Boston University. At the 2004 Moody Trophy, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, Dartmouth once again found itself competing against 17 other teams.

Through tricky winds, A-division sailors Scott Linthicum '04 and Elisabeth Kreter '05 garnered a ninth place finish. B-division counterparts Todd Whitehead '06 and Allison Swindell '04 took seventh, which combined for an aggregate place of sixth overall.

Finally, the Oberg Trophy at Northeastern tested Dartmouth in three divisions of eight races each. While the individual sailors' names were unavailable in the race report, Dartmouth finished seventh in A-division, second in B-division and third in C-division. These finishes resulted in a third place overall standing.

Important regattas are approaching in the next few weeks, with the women's New England Championships this coming weekend at Boston University. The top six finishers will qualify for the Women's National Championships at Cascade Locks, Ore., in late May.
