Brendan Nyhan, a well-known political scientist who taught for seven years at Dartmouth before accepting a position at the University of Michigan last year, will be returning to the College full-time in the fall, he confirmed to The Dartmouth in an email statement.

By a margin of just 34 votes out of over 1,700 cast, Dartmouth’s student body elected Luke Cuomo ’20 to become the College’s next Student Assembly president, according to a press release from the Elections Planning and Advisory Committee. The Student Assembly vice president will be Ariela Kovary ’20, who ran on a ticket with Cuomo.

For the second time in its 150-year history, the Thayer School of Engineering will be led by a woman. The College announced today that Alexis Abramson, a Case Western Reserve University engineering professor and former Department of Energy scientist, will become dean of the school on June 17.

Former interim College President Carol Folt announced her resignation from her position as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday. Folt also announced that she had ordered the removal of a Confederate statue on campus out of safety concerns.

Dartmouth has welcomed 574 students to the Class of 2023 via early decision, compared to 565 last year. The newest cohort of students was selected from a record 2,474 applicants, representing a nine percent increase compared to early applications last year. The decisions were released to applicants on Dec. 13.

Kevin Figgins Jr. ’16 died unexpectedly on Dec. 2, College President Phil Hanlon announced in an email to campus Monday afternoon. Figgins was in Nashville, Tennessee, his hometown, at the time of his death.

A New Hampshire judge has issued a preliminary injunction against Senate Bill 3, a 2017 state law that required new voters to present documentation proving that they are domiciled in the area where they intend to vote.

On Thursday, 21 members of the Class of 2019 were inducted into Dartmouth’s Alpha of New Hampshire chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Six members of the Class of 2020 received the Phi Beta Kappa Sophomore Prize. The induction ceremony was held at Occom Commons.

Kyle Janeczek, a second-year student at the Geisel School of Medicine, has died, College President Phil Hanlon and Geisel dean Duane Compton wrote in an email to campus. The College learned of Janeczek’s death last night.
