During Tuesday’s debate frenzy, the campaign of Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas — one of the front-runners for the 2012 presidential election’s republican ticket — decided to do a little frat hopping to promote the governor. While he didn’t complete a circuit during his stay at Dartmouth, Perry’s 28-year-old son Griffin did make a pit stop at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity on Tuesday afternoon at a casual mixer to discuss politics and his father’s campaign.

At a school where it's easy to constantly perceive perfection, admitting failure is difficult. No one cares to share that disappointing moment, and few wish to recall the feeling that erupted when success was unattainable. Filled with individuals who have excelled for years, Dartmouth consists of those who have always prided themselves on their achievements. What is not discussed, however, are those times when we struggled, even crashed and burned. In theory, we justify failure if it results from exploration and leads to personal growth but what constitutes failure here?

I'm not so sure about the large glass wall that separates the undergraduate dean's offices from the rest of Baker-Berry Library. After sitting in the waiting area and watching several students almost run straight through it, the risks of head trauma seem to outweigh the benefits of its (quite literal) message of transparency. The College probably thought a glass wall would be more welcoming than an intimidating set of engraved double doors, but the truth is, most students who are coming to see their deans aren't that worried about the ambience.

It's 5:00 a.m. and you've got a final in three hours. Instead of sleeping, you're sitting on FFB aggressively clicking through your roommate's ex-boyfriend's sister's junior prom Facebook album with empty Redbulls and Rockstars littered around you.

I believe that contributors to The Dartmouth's opinion section generally seek to express their arguments respectfully and ground their claims in fact. I was therefore quite disappointed by Roger Lott's most recent column titled "Learning to Live Together" (Oct. 10).

The first night I went out freshman Fall, I went to the Tabard. Don't ask me why. To me it was just one of the houses on frat row. Once inside, I realized pretty quickly that this was not a "house" in the same sense as the lacrosse house, which I'd been to a few times with some of my fellow freshman laxers.

The New York Times reported on Monday that at least three dozen state legislatures the majority of which are Republican-controlled have put forth initiatives to make drug testing a prerequisite for all manner of public assistance: welfare, unemployment and food stamps, to name a few. While at first glance this onslaught of new proposals seems sensible (why should taxpayers support drug habits of the poor?), a closer examination reveals that this flawed logic is based on pre-existing class and racial stereotypes and does nothing to solve any of the pressing issues this country faces.

I'd never known such an overwhelmingly happy group of people as my Dimensions buddies.

Reading through the 12 recommendations recently put forth by the Committee on Standards Sexual Assault Review Committee, it is clear that both praise and criticism are in order. On one hand, the recommendations are sensible, long overdue updates to the College's policies and practices regarding sexual assault. On the other hand, the recommendations shed little light on the standard of evidence used for sexual assault reviews, keeping the process muddled and prolonging the widespread perception that the system is inconsistent and unreliable.
