Each year, Dartmouth faculty members work to update their curricula, according to College faculty members interviewed by The Dartmouth, in line with a national trend among faculty at public and private universities, according to a survey released Nov. 6 by the Bringing Theory to Practice program. The survey found that professors implement revisions ranging from minor changes in course readings to larger changes in teaching approaches at least once per year.

The United States federal government is headed for a fiscal train wreck. It has made significant spending commitments primarily on defense, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid but does not have a tax system that will produce enough revenue to meet these commitments in the future. Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, the co-chairs of President Barack Obama's Deficit-Reduction Commission, recently released a proposal that would avert fiscal catastrophe. Both political parties have rejected this plan. Unfortunately, neither party has been honest about what they would do instead.

In responding to the two recent columns by Jordan Osserman '11, Intra-Fraternity Council President Tyler Brace '11 wrote, "[Osserman] cannot understand that wearing a uniform or carrying a lunchbox surely a traumatizing and dehumanizing experience for all is actually a mark of honor for pledges who choose to demonstrate their pride in becoming a part of something greater than themselves," ("Right' and Wrong," Nov. 19).

Virginia Peisch '11, co-captain of the Dartmouth women's field hockey team, played in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Senior Game at the University of Maryland on Saturday. Peisch was joined by her coach, Amy Fowler, who was also selected by the NFHCA to participate in the Senior Game as a coach.

The men's and women's squash teams both competed in their first matches of the season at home this weekend at the Dartmouth Fall Classic. The Big Green dominated their competition with gusto, not losing a single match.

At the women's regatta, the first varsity boat placed fourth with a time of 13:54.5, while the freshmen had the standout performance of the day, earning second out of 23 crews with a time of 13:23.1.

After falling to the University of New Hampshire on Tuesday, the Dartmouth women's basketball team faced tough competition in the TD Bank Classic at the University of Vermont this weekend, where both Boston College and Marist College topped the Big Green, giving the team a 0-4 start to the season.

The Dartmouth football team finished the 2010 season with a winning record, 6-4 overall, on Saturday, soundly defeating the Princeton University Tigers, 31-0. This marks the first time since 1997 that the Big Green recorded a winning season and the first registered shutout in 14 years.

Dartmouth (1-3, 0-0 Ivy) lost a heartbreaking home opener to in-state rival University of New Hampshire. A put-back from UNH senior Dane DiLiegro with both the shot clock and the game clock running down gave the Wildcats a 55-53 victory over the Big Green this past Tuesday at Leede Arena.

Ethan Shaw '12, Phil Royer '13 and Tom Robbins '11 were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region runners list last Monday. They qualified for the award by finishing in the top 25 of the NCAA Regional Championships meet that took place on Nov. 13. At the meet, Shaw led all members of the Dartmouth squad by finishing in 18th place. Royer and Robbins followed close behind, finishing in 19th and 24th, respectively. Both Shaw and Robbins earned the award last year as well. The team failed to qualify for the National meet, however, as it finished fourth overall at Regionals, and only the top two teams receive an automatic bid.

South Bend, Ind., the location for the Big Green's second round game, recorded winds of 15 mph and gusts over 20 mph. Dartmouth won the coin toss and decided to play with the wind for the first half, leading to a 13-7 shooting advantage.
