The Upper Valley Haven, a nonprofit organization in White River Junction, Vt. that provides food, clothing and shelter for Upper Valley residents in need, has experienced a 45-percent increase in visits to its food shelf and increased demand for its shelter facilities during the past year as a result of the economic downturn straining the shelter's material and volunteer resources, development director Liz Verney told The Dartmouth this week.

The spring 2010 Music Foreign Study Program in London has been cancelled for the first time in the program's 20-year history, according to according to Sally Pinkas, the music professor who was slated to lead the program. The program was cut due to low enrollment, as only five students had enrolled in the program three short of the required eight students, Pinkas said.

Graduate students looking for housing in the Hanover area are faced with a limited set of options, according to Graduate Student Council President Tina Chang GR '10. Affordable off-campus housing is in short supply, while on-campus housing provided by the College tends to be more expensive than housing offered by peer institutions, Chang said.

Over a dozen colleges in Massachusetts have implemented strategies to improve students' eating habits and combat youth obesity, often without students' knowledge, The Boston Globe reported on Sunday. Wellesley College, Tufts University and Northeastern University, among others, have reduced portion sizes in response to statistics showing that 25 percent of college students gain weight during their first semester, according to The Globe. The head chef at Merrimack College has altered the menu to include fresh, healthy ingredients that reduce trans fat and sodium content. Harvard University and Boston University have begun to make nutritional information available for students to encourage healthy eating choices. Although some students, particularly athletes, are unhappy with the widespread changes, most students do not notice the healthier substitutions, Ken Toong, executive director of dining at University of Massachusetts at Amherst, told The Globe.

In an effort to encourage students to seek help for their intoxicated peers, Dartmouth College Democrats are working with local state representatives to implement a state-wide "Good Samaritan" law. The law modeled on the College's Good Samaritan Policy would make it more difficult for police to arrest intoxicated students in need of medical attention, addressing what is now a major disincentive for students who consider calling for help.
