Britney Spears, once again, is at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with her new single, "3." It's deja vu: Last October, "Womanizer" hit the top spot.
This time, however, I don't get it at all.
I always like hearing good news about Britney Spears. I figure that losing your mind, losing your kids, losing all of your adult rights and losing your hair is enough bad news for one lifetime. Maybe other people think so too and are trying to cheer her up by liking her new single.
But really, "3" is just an amalgamation of overpowering synth, underwhelming vocals and downright crude lyrics.
Britney doesn't even try to make us guess what she is singing about. It's right out there in the open that she really, really wants a threesome.
It is perplexing that the song is so substance-less, yet at the same time so popular. Not to mention how weird it is to think that her sons are probably backstage when she sings the song in concert.
Where is the clever play on words that we heard in "If You Seek Amy"? Where are the attempts at social commentary we hear in "Gimme More" and "Circus"?
I won't even try to bring up her lack of genuine emotion. Spears stopped connecting with her audience around the time she started making poor life choices, which was a while ago.
The track will no doubt be an instant club hit. It pulses, it's sexual and it probably sounds amazing to someone who isn't sober.
A generic and instantly forgettable tune, "3" sounds as if it was thrown together simply to market Spears' "The Singles Collection," due to hit shelves on Nov. 24.
With every hit single Spears releases, I feel like she is becoming more and more robotic. Pretty soon, she won't have to actually sing anything because producers will just technologically manufacture her voice into another tinny Top 40 hit.
