Let's have a fair look at our nation's most recent foray into something teetering on the edge of becoming what I might term, at least in these PG-13 rated pages, a fiasco. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor recently announced her retirement, and President Bush has nominated Judge John Roberts. Our national scene, with a certain flair that it has in situations like this or Terri Schiavo or Monica, is foaming at the mouth -- waiting, as always, to turn something that has the potential to be truly insightful into a sideshow.

In a move that shocked the Berkeley community, police named two close friends of Meleia Willis-Starbuck '07 as suspects accused of the former Dartmouth sophomore's murder. In a statement issued Wednesday, Berkeley police announced that Christopher Wilson, 20, of Berkeley, Calif. was arrested after confessing to the crime, and an arrest warrant has been issued for Christopher Hollis, 21 of Hayward, Calif.

Standup comedian Bill Santiago performed his set, "Spanglish 101," to a full house in Bentley Theater on Tuesday night. The set showcased the "Spanglish" language and the Latino-American culture at large. Despite his wry underdog humor, Santiago was carefully good-natured and tasteful. He pulled off irreverence without being abrasive -- a rarity in standup comedy.

Two days ago, I walked into Collis bright and early in the morning to find about six people huddled around the television watching the Tour de France. Being a recently-converted Tour de France fan myself, I stopped to see how the race was shaping up in the 16th stage. I stood there for five minutes, and as I turned around to go get my egg-and-cheese sandwich, I realized that another ten people had done the same thing I had and stopped to watch.
