In an attempt to solve the growing problem of a steadily declining Native American college population, one summer program recently invited 50 Native American high-school students to receive an in-depth workshop about the college application process.

All Charles Trumbull '02 wanted was a good grade on a history independent study term paper. Instead, he became embroiled in a cross-national war of words in what has become the latest chapter of the bitter U.S.-Cuba relationship -- a chapter Trumbull said would not have started if the White House had accurately cited his paper.

The baseball world fixated on the New York Yankees' pursuit of Randy Johnson leading up to Saturday's trade deadline. However, it was the Yankees' arch rival, the Boston Red Sox, who made the weekend's headlines. The Sox traded shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, a five-time all star and two-time batting champion, in return for shortstop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. While the Sox lost a Boston icon in the trade, they will ultimately be a better team because of it as they now become the favorite to win the American League pennant.

Don't expect the A-Rod effect to play out in Boston. Unlike the Texas Rangers, who significantly improved when they dealt their superstar shortstop, the Red Sox traded away their shot at post-season success when the team sent away all-star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs for Doug Mientkiewicz and Orlando Cabrera. Yes, Cabrera and Mientkiewicz are Gold Glovers. Yes, Nomar is struggling with a nagging injury and yes, Nomar probably felt uncomfortable in Boston after the Sox's desperate attempts to trade him for Alex Rodriguez this past off-season.

Both Bruce Gago '05 in "Freedom of Hate Speech?" (July 27, The Dartmouth) and College Chaplain Richard Crocker in "Faith Under Fire" (July 13, The Dartmouth) have written to the editor to comment on the debate concerning whether the College should censure Al-Nur for hosting/entertaining, on its website, anti-Semitic interpretations of the Quran. I will summarize the twin positions of Gago and Crocker to demonstrate the misguidedness of their views.

BOSTON -- As a Massachusetts liberal, John Kerry's goal coming out of last week's Democratic National Convention was to establish himself as a candidate who could also appeal to the moderate swing voters. But one group of important voters, the age group represented by Dartmouth students, was seemingly uninterested in the speech, remaining politically apathetic.

For a band as prolific as Van Halen, compiling a truly representative greatest hits album is a nearly impossible task. Take 1996's "The Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1," for example. While the 17-track collection included most of the group's essential tracks, it left off a healthy number of their finest performances.

For almost 20 years, Greg Maddux has been one of greatest ballplayers, period. Since he is a pitcher, Maddux only plays once every four or five games, so he cannot change his team's fortune on a day-to-day basis, but when his day comes, you know what to expect: a quality start.

When he wins his 300th career game, Greg Maddux will solidify himself as one of his generation's greatest pitchers in the past 20 years. However, despite Maddux' s phenomenal career, Roger Clemens -- not Maddux -- is and will be remembered as the greatest pitcher of our time.

Like the Dartmouth social scene, this past week in the sports world had some of everything -- the good, the bad and the ugly. Lance Armstrong's sixth consecutive Tour de France victory was the sentimental play of the week. The Utah Jazz's signing of Mehmet Okur to a six year, $50 million deal highlighted an NBA off-season of bad front-office decisions that include the Golden State Warriors' re-signing of backup center Adonal Foyle -- who has career averages of 3.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game to a five-year, $41.6 million contract.
