Does anyone listen to Meshell Ndegocello? That is, in the sense that one owns one of her releases prior to "Bitter," her latest artistic venture? Her debut release, "Plantation Lullabies" spawned the mediocre single "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)," while her follow-up, "Peace Beyond Passion," birthed no hits whatsoever.

(I don't think I can even type that fast.) I could force my dedicated readers to listen to me babble or I could produce something original, brilliant, and insightful that would intrigue the Dartmouth community. I'll opt for the former

It happened last year, and it certainly won't happen again in 1999. Last August, Lauryn Hill's solo debut accomplished the seemingly unimaginable--it was the critic's darling AND the people's choice. America has been run by a two party political system for so long that it is hard to imagine a viable alternative. For most elections, it does make sense to choose between two different people rather than several, because it greatly simplifies the process.

I think people think we are stupid. Have you ever given any thought to this? Americans must be doing something wrong, because the advertisers, government leaders and other masters of the brainwash in the US seem to think that we are somehow mentally deficient.

The culture we live in often seems marked by a dearth of heroes. It has role models, mentors, and stars but no one noted for nobility or courage. Might this possibly be because society has forgotten what a hero is? Or have things become so bad that true heroes simply no longer exist?

It is time once again for the latest installment of "Eric Talks About Important Cultural Centers of the World," which is a title that should signal to everyone that I will be talking about New York. (If I desired to talk about, say, France, I would instead use a title like "Do Not Read This, It Will Be Boring and About France.")
