I was really expecting to get bumped for the expose on the low quality of grips that the women's tennis team uses. I really am. But I feel like I must make the most of this opportunity.

In 1989, when Major League Baseball announced that all-time hits leader Pete Rose would be banned from the game for life as punishment for gambling on baseball, the phrase "tragedy" got tossed around a lot. One of the game's all-time great players " known to the fans as Charlie Hustle for the effort he put into each and every play " was officially a pariah, and would not be enshrined in the Hall of Fame: "tragedy."

The Eastern Conference playoffs have followed their prescribed path, as the overwhelming choices to reach the conference finals prior to the postseason -- the Pacers and Pistons -- both advanced to play for a shot at the Western Conference champion. While Indiana held a 3-1 advantage in its regular season battles, the acquisition of Rasheed Wallace has now positioned Detroit as the consensus slight favorite going into the series.

At the 38th Women's New England Championships hosted by Boston University, only the top six finishers would qualify for Nationals, out of a gritty 18-team field. Despite these long odds, the Big Green captured a spot in Nationals after an excellent performance over the weekend.

Recently, the Student Assembly called a meeting to discuss the possible expansion of Kresge, in light of the administration's recent shelving of plans to build a new gym to replace the almost 100-year-old Alumni Gym. Sarah Berger called for the student body to "demonstrate the need for a new fitness center," and noted the small budget -- approximately $5,000 a year -- allocated to Kresge.

Remember all that affirmative action fuss? Grutter v. Bollinger, Bakke, Supreme Court -- all frequently-used Google keywords a few months ago. Ever since the High Court made its decision, the affirmative action debate has vanished from the national spotlight only to reappear in the soporific Democratic primary. But with all this talk about democracy in Iraq, instilling freedom to a previously oppressed nation, dare we talk about affirmative action? Shi'ites will soon be in control of the nation; but should Sunnis, Kurds, Turks and Christians be given some sort of promised and guaranteed voice through an affirmative action program? We all know that free elections and freedom of speech are building blocks to democracy, but, in the case of Iraq, is affirmative action also part of the democratic equation?
