Dartmouth soccer had its best weekend of the season as both the men and women defeated Cornell University at home. The men’s team clinched a share of the Ivy League title with a 1-0 win, while the women overcame frustrating results earlier in the season with a 1-0 win to get their first conference win to close out the season.

A Dartmouth team presented four prototypes, including a modular smartphone and a calendar-linked smart ring at the 30th ACM User Interface Software and Technology Symposium. The forum, which took place in Quebec City from Oct. 22 to 25, was a chance for researchers to show off their innovations in human-computer interfaces and featured over 400 teams, each presenting their own research topics, according to General Chair of the conference Krzystof Gajos.

Dartmouth soccer had another split weekend, with both men’s and women’s teams facing off against Harvard University on the road. The women suffered a difficult loss in double overtime, falling 2-1 on the road on Saturday. Later that evening, the men won their game in dramatic fashion, with co-captain Matt Danilack ’18 scoring a game-winning goal in the final minute off a bicycle kick to lift the Big Green 1-0 over the Crimson.

All eyes are on The Palestra. For both men’s and women’s basketball, qualifying as one of the top four teams in the Ivy League is the main goal of the upcoming 2017-2018 basketball season because the teams can play in The Palestra, the University of Pennsylvania’s historic venue and home to the 2018 Ivy League Championship Tournament.

With its Ivy League Championship hopes largely in the balance, the Big Green had questions to answer on Saturday against Harvard University. However, the men fell short in key situations and suffered a 14th-straight loss to the Crimson, leaving the Big Green in need of serious help to win a conference championship.

For the men’s and women’s cross-country teams, Friday morning was arguably the most important morning of the season. The cross country-teams were at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, the one meet of the season that pits the Ivy League schools in a race for the conference title.

Celia Chen, a principal investigator in the Dartmouth Toxic Metals Superfund Research Program and biology professor, is an expert in ecotoxicology and aquatic ecology. She has researched the effects of metal contaminants on aquatic food chains both in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems over the last 15 years. Last month, she represented Dartmouth as a non-governmental organization at a United Nations conference. There, she advocated that scientists be involved in the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a United Nations treaty adopted in 2013 that aims to protect human health and the environment from the hazardous effects of mercury. At the meeting, Chen joined delegates of signatory countries of the treaty.

It was an afternoon filled with frustration and untimely mistakes for the Big Green against Columbia University at Memorial Field on Saturday. Despite mounting a strong comeback in the latter half, Dartmouth fell to the Lions, 22-17, in a matchup that came down to clock management and officiating. With its perfect record tarnished, the Big Green no longer controls its destiny in the Ivy League Championship race.

An increased number of newly-recognized clubs through the Council of Student Organizations were related to science, technology, engineering and math during the 2016-2017 school year, according to Collis director of student involvement Anna Hall. Hall added that the rise in STEM-related clubs highlights an increase in student interest in new technology.

The Native American community at the College celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day last Monday, Oct. 9. The celebration, planned by Native Americans at Dartmouth, began at midnight with a drumming circle on the Green and the lighting of a sacred fire, according to Kianna Burke ’12, the Native American Program interim director.

The men’s soccer team continued its run of good form this season with a 4-0 win over the University of Pennsylvania. The women’s team completed a challenging out-of-conference schedule with a midweek win against the College of the Holy Cross before falling in overtime to Penn 1-0 on Saturday.

In June, athletic director Harry Sheehy announced that Joe Marsh will serve as the interim women’s ice hockey head coach for the 2017-18 season. The announcement came in the wake of head coach Laura Schuler’s appointment as head coach of the 2018 Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team. Schuler’s selection as the head coach for Canada makes her the first former national team player to serve as the team’s head coach at the Olympics. Named Dartmouth’s head coach in 2016, Schuler took over the program from long-time head coach Mark Hudak for the 2016-17 season before temporarily stepping down to lead Canada. Although Marsh will be the team’s third head coach over the last three years, the team remains optimistic about the season and continuing to rebuild and improve after finishing 7-21 overall last season.
