The Brookings Center announced the creation of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform to address the uneven quality, cost and availability of health care in the U.S. on July 24. Dartmouth's Healthcare Center for Policy Research and Reform, along with a number of other institutions, will collaborate on the project. The Engelberg Center's primary goal is to develop and implement new health care policies to increase access, enhance the quality and lower the costs of health care in the U.S. and improve the development of new medicines. Elliot S. Fisher, head of the IHCPC and Primary Investigator of the Dartmouth Atlas Project will be in charge of the Engelberg's efforts at Dartmouth. The Dartmouth Atlas Project maintains detailed health care databases, which will be very helpful to the Engelberg Center. An exchange program for students and faculty will be a key element of the collaboration between Dartmouth and the Center.

Of the thirty-five students who began The Fifty, twenty-nine completed the hike from Robinson Hall to Moosilauke Lodge this weekend. Students hiked through the night, resting briefly at stations manned by approximately 45 volunteers. Organizer Scott Limbird '09 said that, overall, the event was very successful, thanks in large part to the warm, dry weather. The trail is 53.4 miles, more if hikers get lost, and usually takes between 23 and 28 hours to complete. However, a group of students who are also members of Dartmouth's Nordic Ski team ran the first 40 miles and finished the hike in just under 20 hours. Pavel Sotskov '09 said his experience was "incredible," because of both the enthusiasm of the support teams and the physical feat he and his team accomplished. Several students said that the early portions of the trip, including hiking through the night, were not as hard as they had anticipated, though the final 15 miles proved quite difficult. Most students who did not complete The Fifty were derailed by injury, and some students hallucinated because of their exhaustion. Sharon Dauson '09 counted herself lucky, saying she suffered only "painful chafing."

Wednesday's sex screening in Collis, hosted by Dartmouth's student sex awareness group, the Sexperts, featured flavored lube tasting, condom exercises with dildos, rubber dental dam competitions and personal risk consultations. The event, which was inspired by Spring term's alcohol screening, aimed to inform students of both the sexual risks and resources on campus. Upon entering, students were provided with surveys, which they completed before speaking privately with a consultant. "We want people to talk about getting pleasure and giving pleasure," Jessica Lane '09, Sexpert member and organizer of the event, said. The event drew a smaller crowd than the alcohol screening, due to the smaller student population on campus during the summer. The event's attendees and organizers expressed hopes that it will become an annual event.

A thunderstorm ripped through Hanover Monday afternoon, felling two trees on the side of the Green. Hanover Police and firefighters were called to remove the trees at 1:48 p.m. and at 3:04 p.m. they returned to campus when a fire alarm went off in Wilder Hall after water leaked into a smoke detector. Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone said that the storm caused "sporadic" damage throughout the area but that, compared to previous storms, he did not consider this one to be particularly severe. Grafton County, which includes Hanover, remained on a severe thunderstorm watch until 5:00 p.m. Additional thunderstorms were expected Monday night, Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday throughout the day.
