The Senate last Thursday approved the final version of legislation that makes it a federal crime to attack or blockade abortion clinics, their operators or their patrons. President Clinton has said he will sign it.

In his column in The New York Times a couple of weeks ago,Russell Baker summed up quite well how the press of late has been reluctant to seize upon real issues and instead has indulged in feeding frenzies on whatever the trash of the day happens to be.

The Committee on the First-Year Experience is due to make its recommendations at the end of the term. It is my hope that the creation of freshmen dorms is not one of them.

Dating at Dartmouth is extremely perilous territory. Perhaps this is why so few people bother to do it at all.

April 10, 1994 marked the kickoff of this year's Senior Class Gift Program, which will continue until April 25. As a large number of members of the Class of 1994 enjoyed a Hanover Inn-catered dinner Sunday night, we were reminded by a returning alumnus that "Harvard turns out lawyers, Yale turns out doctors, and Dartmouth turns out alumni." It is a special College that gives rise to this sort of sentiment.

Is anyone out there trying to pay as little attention to Whitewater as possible? For those concerned about the First Lady's role, disregard of the matter might be the most worthwhile position to take.

I am more than ready to leave behind the dark and misty mornings and crunch of feet on snow. If only Hanover would let me. As I made the trek Sunday from New York to Dartmouth, I realized that one thing I will not miss about this college is its snowy, slushy, icy, windy winters.

As senior year continues to hurtle rapidly by, I have been thinking a lot about our fleeting youth. I think many of my fellow '94s have been thinking about this too, as a number of them last term told me of their own desire to be a 'shmen again. Although at times I still do feel very young, I thought I would share some things that make me feel extremely old.

I have heard enough from the Hanover merchants about how Topside violates zoning laws, and that the College is trying to put them out of business. If Hanover merchants are so worried about business, they should start by trying to earn it.

Last weekend my aunt and her husband came to visit me. I took them for the perfunctory tour around campus on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and like most first-time visitors to Dartmouth, they were struck by its beauty.

I wanna be a 'shmen. I wanna be so psyched to get into Beta or Chi Gam that I'll climb through a window to do so. I wanna "forget my ID at home" and have to sing the alma mater to get into Bones Gate. I wanna think it's worth it.

I was absolutely dumbfounded by what appeared in The Dartmouth ("A new social experience," The Dartmouth, Sept. 30) under the byline of Amiri Barksdale '96.

The time has come for me to join The Dartmouth Review debate. Why do the editors of The Review seem to think that it is fun to offend as many people as possible in order to prove their point that the First Amendment is unassailable?

Recently, Senator Sam Nunn, head of the Armed Services Committee, touts the gay ban compromise in the Senate as a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The military will no longer ask recruits about their sexual orientation, nor will it conduct investigations to oust homosexuals. But, this also entails a strict code of conduct forbidding harassment, holding hands and same-sex dancing.

When I was accepted at Dartmouth, I thought I was set for life. I made it to the top. All I needed to do was graduate in four years and people would knock down my door to give me an interesting, challenging, personally fulfilling and bank-account-enriching job. Or, if I didn't feel like diving into the job market, I would have my choice of graduate programs and law schools in order to quench my academic thirst.
