Diana Kruger, a visiting professor who specializes in Latin American economics, said she was initially "not too concerned" by the financial crisis because she thought it would be limited to the wealthy nations in which it originated. By the end of 2008, however, loss in consumer confidence in the United States meant lower demand for Latin American imports. As a result, the job markets in those countries have suffered, she said.

After an organization files an appeal, the College lifts any sanctions resulting from the original OAC decision pending the outcome of the review, he explained.

The Dartmouth Outing Club announced the directorate for the 2009 Freshmen Trips Thursday in an e-mail to former Trips participants. Scott Limbird '09 will serve as director and Student Body President Molly Bode '09 will be assistant director. Jake Routhier '10, Maisie Breit '10 and James Cart '10 are this year's Trip leader trainers. The chiefs for the five "croos" were also announced. Emily Baumrin '10 and Tanner Tananbaum '10 will lead H-Croo, Ravi Segal '09 and Jan Gromadzki '10 will run Lodj Croo, and Kate Parizeau '10 and Greg Sokol '10 will head Vox Croo. Billy Corbett '10 was named Climbing Croo chief and Eric Larson '10 will be Grant Croo chief.

William Lynn '76, a former defense lobbyist and President Barack Obama's pick for deputy secretary of Defense, has cleared a major hurdle on his path to Senate confirmation after receiving an ethics waiver from the Office of Management and Budget. The waiver allows Lynn to sidestep an executive order regarding employee ethics, according to a Friday press release from Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Apologies for a country's past wrongdoing can provoke dangerous backlashes and threaten international reconciliation, government professor Jennifer Lind said in a lecture based on her book, "Sorry States: Apologies and International Politics," held in the Rockefeller Center on Thursday. The book focuses on post-World War II West Germany and Japan as comparative examples of the different ways countries remember past atrocities and the subsequent political outcomes.

Dartmouth's three professional schools will attempt to limit the effect of the economic downturn on students by focusing on reducing discretionary spending, rather than cutting major programs, the schools' deans said. The College's hiring freeze will apply to the schools, but many of their budget decisions will be made independently, according to Adam Keller, executive vice president for finance and administration.

Masik Collegiate Fragrances has introduced a fragrance line that aims to capture various universities' "signature scents," according the company's web site. Masik says it draws its inspiration from school colors, campus landscape and architecture, school mascots and themes in universities' fight songs, among other attributes. The company has launched Pennsylvania State University and University of North Carolina perfumes and colognes, which cost $60 for a 3.4 ounce bottle. The Penn State perfume draws upon white patchouli, rose, lilac and vanilla, while the cologne has notes of cracked pepper and blue cypress, the Associated Press reported. The company plans to release six more university-inspired lines next year. A portion of profits will benefit the universities' scholarship and athletic funds, according to the Masik site.

The Asian American community is seeing a growing trend mental health issues relating to depression and academic pressures -- an exacerbated by a cultural adversity to seeking treatment, according to Josephine Kim, a lecturer at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education and the featured guest of Thursday's Pan Asian Community Dinner. The event, "Breaking the Silence: Asian Americans and Mental Health," was hosted by the Pan Asian Council in Collis Common Ground.

Actress Rachel Dratch '88 brought some of her Saturday Night Live humor to Hanover on Sunday afternoon, greeting volunteers from the Dartmouth College Democrats in the Hinman Forum of the Rockefeller Center. Dratch gave the volunteers a pep talk as they prepared their campaign efforts for Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama and former New Hampshire governor Jeanne Shaheen, the state's Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

Fall fraternity and sorority rush came to a close this week, as 273 women were offered bids and 308 men sunk bids from single-sex Greek organizations. Participation in both men's and women's rush increased this term.
