The Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault hosted its first annual Dartmouth Symposium on Sexual Assault on Saturday to reflect upon the programs and initiatives currently in place to address sexual assault on campus and consider new ways to confront it in the future. Over 100 faculty, administrators, leaders of campus groups, coaches, sports team captains and executive members of Greek and co-ed organizations gathered at round table discussions in Alumni Hall for a period of four hours to address sexual assault on campus.

Jennifer Madden, a family practitioner interested in medical care and hormone therapy for transgender individuals, discussed the history of transgender health care and research and current practices for primary practitioners providing care for transgendered patients in a lecture to Dartmouth Medical School students and other members of the Dartmouth community in Chilcott Auditorium, on Tuesday.

Following several recent incidents of crime, including a reported instance of sexual assault on Sunday morning and four thefts in the Zimmerman Fitness Center in Alumni Gym this term, Safety and Security is encouraging students to remain alert as the investigations continue, Roddy Young, the Office of Public Affairs' vice president for communications, said in an email to The Dartmouth. At 12:04 p.m. on Sunday, Director of Safety and Security and College Proctor Harry Kinne sent a campus-wide email alerting the College community of an alleged incident of sexual assault that occurred early Sunday morning.

Occupy Dartmouth, an informal student group initially established to protest the eviction of New York City's Occupy Wall Street movement, began its protest on the Green on Oct. 13 and has since relocated to the lawn in front of Collis. The group received permission for and has erected a tent in front of Collis to continue its round-the-clock occupation.

Regardless of partisan affiliation, College students were pulled into national political conversation on Tuesday night as they watched the Republican primary debate from Spaulding Auditorium, at the College-sponsored watch party in Leede Arena or from their rooms with laptops streaming DarTV. The day after the debate, following the mass exodus of candidates, journalists and political pundits, many students interviewed by The Dartmouth said they felt proud of their school and were happy to have been given the opportunity to engage in the democratic process.

With the Oct. 11 Republican primary debate drawing nearer, Dartmouth officials are working to prepare the logistical elements of the College-hosted event. The debate, which will take place in Spaulding Auditorium from 8-10 p.m., will focus on the hot-button topic of the economy and will be moderated by PBS host and renowned journalist Charlie Rose, Bloomberg Television White House correspondent Julianna Goldman and The Washington Post's national political correspondent Karen Tumulty.

Facebook became the first online service to implement PhotoDNA a photo recognition software developed by computer science professor Hany Farid in 2008 to quickly identify images of child pornography circulated on the web to target illegal photos and their distributors, Facebook announced on May 19. Farid, who teamed up with Microsoft three years ago to develop PhotoDNA, said he is happy his tool is being used to "disrupt the global flow of child pornography."

What we now know as Green Key weekend, described by a 1935 issue of The Dartmouth as the "social highlight of the spring," began with the tradition of the Junior Promenade formal dance in 1899. The prom was the centerpiece of a four-day weekend that included a street parade, a bonfire, two open-air concerts by the Dartmouth Band, a bicycle parade and a baseball game against Williams College.

The Southwestern Vermont Health Center's Board of Trustees approved an affiliation between SVHC and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, according to SVHC Communications Director Kevin Robinson. The affiliation will allow SVHC and DHMC which falls under the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system to exchange ideas, conduct collaborative research projects and share physicians' services and professional opinions between the two medical centers while the hospitals adjust to national health care reform, Robinson said.
