Since Julian Jaynes' origin of conscious ness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind, the first questions entertained by men -- even before the cave-dwellers of Western Asia, North America, and the European peninsula painted graffiti on their walls--were questions of an unanswerable nature, all beginning with the parentally-dreaded, aspiratory phoneme "Why?" Several millennia later, verb forms introduced the existential "Why is?" You can be sure that there was a class of linguistic innovators, probably burned at the stake, for slotting noun phrases in at the end of this predicate.

What is multiculturalism? Is it a prized collection of Native American and African and Afro-American studies classes? Is it a fine list of various ethnic studies departments and programs? Is it the institutional attempt to educate blacks and other "historically disadvantaged" peoples about their histories? Is it our hard-earned, long-overdue, and well-deserved place in the academy? It would seems that multiculturalism is precisely these things.

"To be or not to be"- that is my eternal question. Shall I be a millionaire by 30? Shall I be a world renowned politician or architect of people, enjoying fame and power?

Lining the pages of every paper, magazine and leaflet are words in praise and support of a new social movement. This uprising is strong in its demands and its support grows daily among the liberals and youth of this country.

Though we enjoy the label and all of its benefits, the state of intellectualism at Dartmouth is endangered.

Maslow has a theory on human needs. It is a pyramid -- at the bottom of the pyramid are physical needs, like food and clothing. At the middle are psychological needs like safety and security. In the middle is also a whole complex of other emotional needs like love, acceptance, acknowledgment and fulfillment. At the top of the pyramid is the ultimate human goal -- self actualization, whatever that means.

Over the course of the past four days I have received many BlitzMail messages and even a threatening phone call for the editorial I wrote for the Thursday Sept. 30, 1993 edition of The Dartmouth.

How many of you Dartmouth men wish that there was more to the social life here than getting drunk with buddies and going to the same old fraternities and meeting the same old 115-pound waifs with trust funds?

Recently, I have heard much talk about Dartmouth Review mentor/National Review Assistant Editor/Cheatmonger/English Professor Jeffrey Hart speaking to the freshman class during Orientation Week. I cannot fathom the great controversy.

I do not like to read books or newspapers. I think they are a form of intellectual cheating. I like to solve my own problems and pull myself up by my own mental bootstraps, but when I read magazines or newspapers, they swipe the pleasure of solving problems from my grasp.

The discussion of feminism in the academy and in the nation has generated quite a large body of scholarly literature. Most of it, like the body of literature surrounding afrocentrism, seeks out the hidden histories of women. Implied in this search for a historical memory is the notion that by knowing the past we can better understand the present and guide the future. This is a very reasonable and true notion.

There is a flood in the middle of America. Our hearts have all gone out to the victims of the continued rains in the Midwest. All of us can sympathize with the pain and loss that the people in the heartland of America feel.

Dartmouth has been up in arms because of the violation of a precious code by which all Americans live and die -- that is, some live with it while others die trying to attain it. On campus, letters have been sent to The Dartmouth. There have been harassing and insulting Blitzmail and door messages. Physical confrontations have occurred and muted physical threats issued.
