Picks of the Week: Songs for Summer

By The Dartmouth Web Staff | 5/29/15 9:29am

Each week, Dartbeat asks a group of musically inclined students to recommend their favorite songs of the week according to a particular theme. This week, we’re skipping ahead of all the finals studying songs to get to the long awaited arrival of summer.

Icona Pop — Emergency

Maya Poddar: First things first, this song doesn’t really sound anything like “I Love It,” Icona Pop’s previous summer anthem. “Emergency” takes the swing/funk-inspired electro-pop trend and runs with it. It’s a fun, bouncy track with none of the nihilistic anger or house musicality of “I Love It.” The punchy sax beats are very European clubs circa 2011, but they’re used sparingly. The track has a lot going on, but it all pulls together for a nice summer party starter.

Tove Lo — Talking Body
*Note: This song was used in an earlier edition of Picks of the Week.

Koryn Ternes: Swedish pop artist Tove Lo recently gained popularity with the release of her album “Queen of the Clouds” late last year. Her slow-burning hit “Habits” seemed to be the star of the show from the album, putting her on the charts earlier this year. “Talking Body” — another song off of the album — takes on an edgier vibe lyrically, and has the potential to be the next dance party hit. As the weather heats up, so does this track, and I’m predicting “Talking Body” to be in the running for this summer’s top hits.

Passion Pit — Moth’s Wings

Samantha Webster: Something about the starry sounds at the beginning of this song that build to the onset of lyrics more than half a minute into the song makes it a summer tune in my book. At points, it almost sounds like the glittery melody is being played underwater and the song finishes off with the clinging of wind chimes. While the lyrics are sparse in summer imagery, lines like "But the clouds are clearing up" and "Come lay with me on the ground" give it just enough to inspire thoughts of sunshine and summer love. While this track is off their debut full-length, Passion Pit put out their newest album, “Kindred,” in March, so if you dig this, go check out their new stuff as well!
