Picks of the Week: In Recovery

By The Dartmouth Web Staff | 5/15/15 11:01am

Each week, Dartbeat asks a group of musically inclined students to recommend their favorite songs of the week according to a particular theme. Finally, Green Key has arrived — but by Sunday, you’ll need a soundtrack to help you pick up the pieces and recover from your weekend of fun and debauchery. These are a few suggestions from our music staff for that playlist.

Cage the Elephant — Cigarette Daydreams

Sam Webster: A few weeks ago I used The Decemberists' "Make You Better" for my Pick of the Week. Now that the topic is songs for recovery, I am wholeheartedly regretting that decision because, well, that's a perfect title for a recovery song. The next best thing in my mind, though, is certainly "Cigarette Daydreams" by Cage the Elephant. If you, like me, hadn't thought about this band since "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" had its heyday, go check out their most recent album, Melophobia (2013). "Cigarette Daydreams" is one of the many solid songs off that album. To be fair, the start of this music video is odd. It begins with muttered lines of French and disjointed scenes played in black and white. While this might not be the best thing for a mental recovery, softly-strummed guitar and lyrics like, "you can drive all night looking for the answers in the pouring rain" make it a perfectly calm song for whatever type of recovery you're making after this weekend. If you want to skip the indie intro, go directly to 1:25 or contact your local Spotify provider.

ZHU — Cocaine Model

Koryn Ternes: I discovered ZHU during spring term last year when I came across what is now one of my all time favorite songs, “Paradise Awaits.” Somehow, a year later, I am only just coming across “Cocaine Model” for the first time. Equally as catchy, this song’s chill vibes are perfect for lazy afternoons on the Green or winding down after a big weekend. Give it a listen, and if you like what you hear, check out some of this talented producer’s other songs.

Valley Lodge — Go

Chris Leech: Come Sunday morning, I’m going to need something with a catchy rhythm to get me out of bed. A good recovery song has a beat but doesn’t pound so hard that it makes your head hurt. “Go” by Valley Lodge walks this line perfectly. The intro of the song might be better known as the play-in music for John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight,” but the song is pretty great in its own right — I’ll definitely be listening by the end of this weekend.
