Picks of the Week: Get Back in the Groove

By The Dartmouth Web Staff | 4/10/15 3:50am

Each week, Dartbeat asks a group of musically inclined students to recommend their favorite songs of the week according to a particular theme. This week we focus on songs to get you back in the groove. Now that it’s week two, students are falling back into the rhythm of classes, activities and all the other things that take up time here. Enjoy!

Mikky Ekko – Smile

Grace Miller: Maybe you’ve already heard Mikky Ekko’s first studio album, “Time,” (2015), or maybe you are still trying to place the name. The reason he sounds so familiar is because of his killer feature on Rihanna’s “Stay.”As soon as I heard the theme for this week I knew I wanted to share this song, because I’m pessimistic like that. I feel like it perfectly embodies the beginning of the term: everything and everyone looks happy and hopeful, but you know that the worst is yet to come. Get excitedfor a fantastic term!

SebastiAn – Embody

Tiantian Zhang: During senior year of high school I was bit by the jaded bug — things started feeling kind of dull, and I lost some of the excitement and energy that had propelled me through the previous years. In search of a more enthusiastic attitude, I turned to the world of electronic dance music and was introduced to this beauty. With its relaxed pulse and a sweet music video (seriously, please gimme this guy's audacity and dance moves), "Embody" by SebastiAn rejuvenated me and provided a nice momentum for the rest of my high school career. As you settle into the term,if you're looking tobring some energy back into your life, check out SebastiAn, embody this talented dancer, and revitalize your spring.

Good Old War – Coney Island

Samantha Webster: In the mindset of getting back in the groove, I'd like to introduce you to a song called "Coney Island" by Good Old War. For me it was one of those songs that instantly clicked and made me hit replay over and over again. The opening lines strike me as words describing wiping the slate clean and getting back to where you need to be. It begins, "I found the letter in the mailbox today and I said 'Thank you for your thoughts but I am done,'" which to me so plainly represents cutting someone or something that's been rattling around in your head right out of your life. I've found that this upbeat little song is the perfect accompaniment to get me in the groove for studying, push me through answering all my unread blitzes or just to take a walk around campus.

Torren Foot - Rondo (Hey Sam Remix)

Maya Poddar: Full disclosure: this song is super dumb. And I love it. There is absolutely no thinking involved when I listen to this track. The remix has an energetic, stable beat that is just a tad more interesting than the original. This is the song I turn up right before I go out. It’s the track that gets me through the draggier bits of my problem sets. It’s dumb and fun and strangely soothing.

Beach Athletixx – California Future

Koryn Ternes: This energetic track had me hooked after just one listen, and I’ve been playing it on repeat ever since. This song’s exotic sound leads to an irresistible build-up having me dreaming of California weather during this snowy Hanover “spring.” Although it’s brief at just over two minutes long, this song is sure to brighten up your week.
