On Oct. 14, Dartmouth field hockey broke its eight-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over Holy Cross at Chase Field in Hanover. With this win in their final non-conference home match, the Big Green improved to 3-8 on the season.

Heading into the matchup, the team hadn’t notched a win in more than a month. They claimed their last victory in a 2-1 overtime thriller against the University of Maine on Sept. 12.

Midfielder Lucia Campaño ’27 said that it was “nice” to win after “a few tough games in a row.”  Head coach Mark Egner praised the team’s “resilience” after “the run we’ve been on.”

With three minutes to go in an evenly-matched first quarter, Campaño took a shot off a rebound that met the net. It was Campaño’s third goal of the season.

Campaño said that the team was focused on “not making a bunch of mistakes.” Egner said that he told the team to aim to get “60 minutes of locked-in quality hockey” and avoid the “slip-ups that hurt us.” He also emphasized playing “simple, clean hockey” and “not playing through contact.” The team followed through with a disciplined display, receiving zero fouls in the match.

Despite four conceded penalty corners in the second quarter, the Big Green doubled their lead in the 18th minute. Defender Ella Bowman ’27 scored her fourth goal of the season with another tap-in from short range off a rebound.

Looking to score her first goal of the season halfway through the second quarter, Riley Dumigan ’27 had a strong shot, but it was stopped by the well-placed Holy Cross goalie.

Despite a fierce second-quarter matchup, Dartmouth pulled further ahead in the third quarter. They started the period strong with a penalty corner, but the Big Green couldn’t capitalize with points. Two minutes later, though, Campaño drove down the middle to her second goal of the match and the third for Dartmouth.

Dartmouth’s fourth and final goal came with five seconds remaining in the third quarter. Olivia Galiotos ’26 had a rebound goal in front of the net to bring the score to 4-0.

The third quarter was Dartmouth’s most successful offensive run, with five shots on goal and two scored.

The Big Green defended Holy Cross’s seven total penalty corners well. Dartmouth goalkeeper Ava Carlson ’26 saved three shots.

The supportive team culture was clear on the field, as well as off, and Egner said that the team leaders made an extra effort before the game to boost the team morale.

“The captains and some of the seniors were decorating the locker room to make sure today was a special day,” Egner said. “That really paid off.”

Campaño also said that the team’s chemistry has strengthened over the season.

“Everyone’s super close, and we’ve come together really well as this season’s gone on,” she said.

The team will look to bounce back in the busy two weeks ahead of them, with two more away games against Cornell University and Colgate University before returning to Hanover for their season closer against Brown University.
