Letter to the Editor: Dartmouth is the Sane Ivy

Lex McCusker ’74 argues that Beilock’s absence from the AACU open letter was thoughtful and constructive.

Re: Dartmouth only Ivy to abstain from signing letter against Trump administration funding cuts

The headline of this article is true as far as it goes. But it fails to mention that many excellent colleges and universities were also not signatories to the letter. These include Stanford, University of Chicago, New York University, Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, Rice University, the California Institute of Technology and the University of Southern California.

Dartmouth is not alone in shunning the empty gesture of the American Association of Colleges and Universities letter. Rather, College President Sian Leah Beilock is providing leadership to them and other college presidents.

President Beilock’s approach to the recent actions of the Trump administration distinguish Dartmouth from the Ivy “herd.”  Her letter of response is thoughtful and constructive. She considers all sides of the issue, and she lays out cogent arguments for her position. She practices what she preaches.

Unlike the criminals who recently defaced Dartmouth Hall, she continues to demonstrate to all that Dartmouth is the sane Ivy.
