Upper Valley sees crime over senior week

Hanover saw several unconnected crimes in the days following spring term's close.

On Wednesday night, an armed man robbed CVS Pharmacy on South Main Street. He forced an employee to open two safes and stole prescription medication before leaving through a rear door, Hanover police said.

Police captain Frank Moran said he was not at liberty to disclose information on the stolen medication.

The suspect, described as white, thin and around six feet tall, wore a homemade black mask and smelled of cigarette smoke. Security footage shows the suspect wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray pants, white sneakers and blue gloves. He entered the 24-hour store at around 9:55 p.m. with what appeared to be a handgun.

Safety and Security director Harry Kinne alerted campus to the news in an email alert on Thursday morning.

On Thursday evening, Kinne notified campus that tainted heroin, possibly linked to Dartmouth's campus, may have recently caused the death of an Upper Valley resident.

He advised community members to "be smart and be safe," noting that all illicit drugs are prohibited at the College.

The Associated Press reported in May that some Vermont and New Hampshire towns have recently seen an rise in heroin usage. Some attribute the shift to the growing expense of prescription painkillers, which provide a similar high.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Safety and Security reported an anonymous online threat related to Sunday's Commencement ceremony. At the time, Safety and Security wrote that it had "reason to believe the threat is not credible."

On Thursday, Kinne said the anonymous threat was identified as a student in a follow-up alert. The College and authorities took "appropriate and necessary actions" to ensure community safety.
