To the Editor:
Monday's editorial ("Verbum Ultimum: Missing Mentorship," Apr. 8) makes the accurate point that Greenways was a "wonderful occasion." Indeed it was. Over April 5 to 7, Dartmouth welcomed home hundreds of alumnae for an extraordinary and moving weekend of lectures, discussions and personal connections.
The editorial, however, goes on to criticize the College for failing to provide adequate networking opportunities for students. In fact, there were many events and instances where those connections were possible, and I thank the students who chose to take advantage of them.
More than 300 undergraduates registered to attend Greenways events; unfortunately, fewer than half actually attended.
The two-hour, Friday night reception was designed specifically to foster personal connections between students and alumnae. Representatives from 19 student groups were on hand to speak with alumnae about their experiences, and we are grateful they could join us. Regrettably, most of the students who had registered chose not to attend and missed the opportunity to speak with more than 300 alumnae in a less structured, casual setting.
Personal connections could also have been made during Laurel Richie '81's inspirational keynote address, the alumnae-packed luncheon with comedian Rachel Dratch '88, the 16 Saturday panels and the screening of MAKERS with producer Pamela Mason Wagner '81, but despite the initial wave of interest, the seats we reserved for students were empty.
We will continue to create opportunities for students to meet with members of our loyal alumnae network, and we welcome feedback about how best to bring the students to the table.
