Women's lax jumps out to lead, downs Brown

Women's lacrosse held off a second-half comeback by Brown University to secure the team's third conference victory of the season.
Women's lacrosse held off a second-half comeback by Brown University to secure the team's third conference victory of the season.

Playing in only its third away game of the season, Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead that it maintained for the entire game. Liz Calby '14 started and ended a 4-0 run in the first seven minutes of the game with goals by Kirsten Goldberg '12 and Sarah Plumb '12 providng the points in between. All four goals were scored in under three minutes.

The Bears responded with a goal by junior Tara Rooke at the 15:33 mark, but Dartmouth quickly tallied two more goals of its own and widened the margin to 6-1.

"The Brown game was a really great Ivy win for us," Plumb said, "We really came out hard in the first half, and I think that the energy and fight that we brought to this game really showed in the final score."

With the Big Green leading 10-5 in the second half, the Bears began to mount a furious rally. Goals from sophomore Grace Healy, freshman Alexandra Crerend and sophomore Bre Hudgins cut the lead to 10-8 before Goldberg scored with a man up to reverse the tide. During Brown breakouts, Dartmouth emphasized redefend, which is when midfielders work back toward the defensive end in transition defense.

"We really maintained our composure and executed the game plan," Goldberg said. "We moved the ball quickly up the field, which enabled us to attack Brown's defense. Our redefend also sparked our play."

Dartmouth went on to score the last five goals in the game, en route to a 14-8 victory. Calby ended the day with career highs of four goals and five points.

Both Goldberg and Hana Bowers '13 finished the game with three goals apiece. Bowers is now the only player for the Big Green who has scored a goal in all eight games this season.

Plumb tallied two goals for the Big Green while also adding six draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover.

The defense guarded Dartmouth's goal effectively, forcing nine turnovers and winning 14 draw controls. Goalie Kristen Giovanniello '14 served as a forceful last line of defense, accumulating five saves.

Dartmouth also led in shots (22-21), draw controls (14-10) and caused turnovers (9-8).

"Our ride produced a lot of momentum for us because when we stopped their transition it really deflated the Brown attack," Goldberg said. "It also works to connect the entire team because every single player on the field is vital for our redefend to be successful."

Over the weekend, Dartmouth will travel to New York to take on Cornell University on Saturday and Syracuse University on Monday afternoon.

"We still have some things to work on, but heading into a big weekend on the road, I think the team is really excited about where we are right now in the season," Plumb said.
