The Quakers (11-2-0, 3-1-0 Ivy) came out in the first half with an overpowering offense, which the Big Green failed to challenge. Dartmouth had several scoring opportunities of its own but could not find the back of the net.
Midway through the first half, Chrissy Lozier '14 managed to get off a shot only to have it blocked by a Penn defender. Seconds later, Libby Hamlin '13 struck with another shot, but it went just wide of the goal.
Penn got on the board in the 29th minute, when sophomore Kathryn Barth fired the ball inside the left post.
The second half brought renewed efforts from the Big Green defense.Dartmouth held Penn to only one shot in the second half which the Quakers converted to a goal after allowing six in the first half.
Colleen Hogan '12 started in goal for Dartmouth and made two saves throughout the game. Although atypical for a goaltender, Hogan also managed to try to force a head shot into the Penn net as time in the second half expired. In a final attempt to score, the Big Green sent all its players forward to bolster its offense. Hogan's shot went wide of the goal, however.
Marina Moschitto '14 and Hamlin both attempted shots in the second half to no avail. The Big Green noticeably stepped up its aggression in the second segment of the game, resulting in yellow cards for Aurelia Solomon '13 and Ally Dutton '12.
Penn capped its win in the game's final minutes, when its only shot of the half translated into a goal. Barth picked up the goal her fifth of the season on a header from a corner kick.
The win marked Penn's sixth straight ahead of its matchup with Yale University this weekend. The Quakers are tied with Yale (7-4-2, 3-1-0 Ivy) for second place in the League. Penn has lost just one League game, against first-place Harvard University.
Dartmouth has struggled to make use of corner kicks this season, and Penn had a noticeable advantage in the set-play situation on Saturday. The Big Green had two corner kicks in the contest while the Quakers had seven, including the one that led to its second goal.
Dartmouth plays Boston University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to conclude its three-game road trip. The Terriers (14-2-1, 7-0-0 America East) beat the Big Green last season, 1-0.
