Now Playing in Hanover: Something Borrowed

Something Borowed
(L-r) JOHN KRASINSKI as Ethan, GINNIFER GOODWIN as Rachel, KATE HUDSON as Darcy and COLIN EGGLESFIELD as Dex in Alcon Entertainment’s romantic comedy “SOMETHING BORROWED,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Directed by: Greenfield With: Goodwin, Hudson, Egglesfield, Krasinski112 minutes Rated PG-13

This film was a romantic comedy, but it might as well have been a "comedy" given how unromantic it actually was. Effectively a drawn-out commercial for Heineken, most of the film took place in bars or at the Hamptons with overblown product placement for the beer. This factor, and the characters' ignorance of how adorable Ethan was, stripped the film of its romantic component and replaced it with tackiness. Dana Venerable

"Something Borrowed" recycles a standard romantic comedy plotline to a lackluster effect. While the plotline is predictable Rachel is torn between being loyal to her best friend, Darcy, and following her heart and fighting for Dex the characters are just as predictable, not to mention one-dimensional. Rachel lacks confidence and suffers from an inferiority complex, making her an uninspiring protagonist. Alison Leung

"Something Borrowed" falls short of a successful romantic comedy, as the characters remain uninspiring and bland, deploying predictable lines such as "I didn't think someone like you could like someone like me." As a Heineken commercial, though, the film succeeds by leaps and bounds the product placement is overwhelming. The chemistry between Egglesfield and Goodwin isn't half bad, but as the seriousness of their affair increases, they become less believable as a potential couple, which can be attributed to Egglesfield's inability to be much more than handsome. The ending will leave you unsatisfied, but you can leave the theater knowing at least this much Hudson likes to dance. Kate Sullivan
