Greek organizations plan variety of parties for weekend

Greek organizations are hoping to take advantage of nice weather by offering students an extensive range of outdoor festivities, including concerts, fundraising events and parties over Green Key. The weekend will also feature dance parties, a pig roast and a toga party.

Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority began early festivities Wednesday night with its traditional Tackies dance party, according to KDE social chair Claire Monagan '12. Hosted by KDE the Wednesday night before every big weekend, the party allows students to dance and "don their finest tacky clothing," Monagan said.

On Thursday, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity hosted its signature Champagne Party while Theta Delta Chi Fraternity held its annual America-themed party, according to SAE social chair John Shi '12 and TDX social chair Anjelo Austria '12.

Rock and funk band Blue Mountain Bustdown and Louisiana-based soul, blues and R&B singer Bobby Rush will perform outside Phi Delta Alpha fraternity during the fraternity's annual Block Party on Friday afternoon, according to Phi Delt social chair Jacob Wijnberg '12.

Wijnberg said "several hundred" people normally attend the event.

Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity will host its third annual Gammapalooza party Friday evening, which will feature four performing artists and four DJs, former Chi Gam social chair and event organizer Eric Tanner '11 said.

Performers will include remix artist DJ Benzi, the hip-hop group The Dean's List and electro-pop artists Christoph Andersson and Stepdad, as well as campus DJs Rukus (aka Ruslan Tobulatov '09), HBBS (aka Dan Kagan '09), Enzo (aka Trey Roy '09) and Chuck Chambers (aka Patrick Chen '12), according to Tanner.

"Last year, inside and the front lawn were filled from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.," Tanner said. "We expect no different this year."

Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity will hold its Klub Kappa Kabana party on Friday as well, featuring DJ Kwangy (aka Kenneth Wang '12), according to Tri-Kap social chair Tanay Ganga '13. Music will consist of "techno, mash-ups and popular hip-hop music," Ganga said.

Also on Friday, Alpha Theta coed fraternity will hold its traditional Seven Deadly Sins party at 10 p.m., according to Alpha Theta social chair Daniel Mott '12.

On Saturday afternoon, Alpha Delta fraternity will host its annual Lawn Party, showcasing 1980s cover band Orange Crush and "up-and-coming" artist Brenton Duvall, AD social chair Michael Hauge '12 said.

"We wanted musical acts that would appeal to a wide variety of students on campus and acts that would perform a great show," Hauge said. "Orange Crush and Brenton Duvall rock the stage every time they get up there so they seemed like obvious choices."

Chi Heorot fraternity will host its Toga Party on Saturday at 11 p.m. featuring DJ Postman (aka Matt Knight '11), according to Heorot social chair Nicholas Resendes '12.

The annual party, typically held during Homecoming weekend, was rescheduled to Green Key weekend after Heorot's "plans fell through," Resendes said.

The Tabard coed fraternity will hold its Disco Inferno party on Saturday evening, which will feature DJ Msto, according to Tabard social chair Catherine Faber '12.

Several houses will offer opportunities for students to eat while over the weekend.

TDX will hold its annual Pig Roast starting Saturday at noon, according to Austria.

The event will boast "three whole pigs, red sauce, tons of bread and more," Austria said.

Delta Delta Delta sorority will offer its second annual Delta House of Pancakes brunch Saturday from noon to 3 p.m., Tri-Delt social chair Heather Reiley '12 said.

Hosted to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. the breakfast will feature outdoor bluegrass band Spare Parts, according to Reiley.

"We're a national sorority so we can't host any parties or drinking events, so it's always fun for us to be able to open up our house to campus," Reiley said.

KDE will also host fundraisers Saturday afternoon on its lawn, including a Boloco burrito sale by the Big Green Bus and a tie-dying event by the youth-mentoring program DREAM, Monagan said.

Representatives from Phi Tau coed fraternity, Sigma Delta sorority and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority said their houses will not hold open events during Green Key weekend.

Alpha Chi Alpha, Beta Alpha Omega, Bones Gate, Psi Upsilon, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Zeta Psi fraternities did not respond to inquiry by press time.
