The women showcased their broad talent, scoring 23 points to finish 11th out of 50 teams at the ECAC Championships. Participation in the meet required qualification during the season.
"We didn't have a lot of people come to this meet, but we did really well with the people we had here," Chrissy Supino '12 said.
The success of the relay teams propelled the Big Green effort. Dartmouth took second in both the 4x800-meter relay and the distance medley, receiving a total of 16 points. The 4x800 team consisted of Supino, Monica Adler '14, Andrea Imhof '11 and Arianna Vailas '14, while the distance medley was run by Adler, Supino, Vailas and tri-captain Alex Tanner '11.
"We thought we could do really well in the [distance medley] and we beat our [personal record] from last time, which was really good because we got the NCAA provisional qualification," Supino said. "So that's nice because it's something we haven't seen in a really long time."
Dartmouth also had success in the 3,000-meter run, with the team's freshmen Abbey D'Agostino '14, Caitie Meyer '14 and Katelyn Walker '14 driving the Big Green's effort.
D'Agostino and Meyer placed fifth and seventh, respectively, earning the team six total points. Janae Dunchack '14 added a team point with her eighth-place finish in the pentathlon event, where she scored 3,390 points.
"Our freshmen in the [3,000-meter run] were really amazing to watch," Supino said. "They are always up in the front mixing it up. They're not afraid of anything and I think that's something that's really good for the team."
The men brought only three athletes to the IC4A meet several of the team's other qualifiers chose to rest between the indoor and outdoor seasons but still managed to tie with Brown University for 35th place out of 51 teams. The Big Green scored seven team points.
Dom Filiano '14 competed in the shot put, finishing in 10th place with a distance of 15.83 meters. Head coach Barry Harwick said he was pleased with Filiano's performance, which was Filiano's best throw of the season.
David Irving '11 earned the Big Green six points with his third-place finish in the weight throw. Irving threw 18.44 meters, beating out University of Connecticut sophomore Joshua Faboyede by 0.01 meters.
The final Dartmouth point came from Connor Reilly '13, who placed eighth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.04 seconds. Despite feeling sick and running a fever, Reilly made the finals before starting issues led to his slowest time of the weekend.
"I qualified for finals but in the finals my box slipped out from under me and I didn't call the race back so they just kept it going," he said. "[My time] was alright considering, but obviously it wasn't fast for the final."
Reilly's low expectations entering the race eased some of his disappointment over the final run.
"It was frustrating but I didn't have high expectations because I was sick all week," he said. "I had a fever going in so I ran through it and just happy to get the races in."
One other Big Green athlete competed over the weekend Anthony Romaniw '13 ran at the Columbia Last Chance Meet in an attempt to qualify for next week's NCAA championships.
The meet, designed to give athletes an extra chance to run an NCAA-qualifying time, was held at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City. Romaniw ran the 800-meter event and finished third overall with a time of 1:49.67, but did not make the qualifying time.
"We just wanted to get him at an elite-level 800-meter race and he did a good job with that," Harwick said. "He was close enough that he deserved a chance to go out and race."
With the indoor season concluding, Harwick said he is looking forward to progressing in the spring.
"I thought the indoor season was successful for us, but I think that at the outdoor Ivy championships we can score a lot more points than we did at the indoor championships," he said.
Dartmouth will begin training for the outdoor season during its spring break trip to North Carolina and South Carolina, which starts on March 16.
