The Princeton University men's and women's basketball teams earned bids to this year's NCAA tournament. The 14-seeded Tigers men's squad lost to four-seeded University of Kentucky on a last-second shot in the first round of the big dance by a score of 59-57, as reported by ESPN.com. The Wildcats won a spot in the Final Four with its win against the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on Sunday. Last year, the Cornell University men's team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen round before falling to Kentucky, 62-45. On the women's side, the 12-seeded Princeton team was also eliminated from the tournament in the first round after succumbing to the five-seeded Georgetown University squad, 65-49.
Falling just short of advancing to the Frozen Four, the No. 1 Yale men's hockey team lost to the University of Minnesota-Duluth by a score of 5-3 in Saturday's East Regional game, according to the Yale Daily News. Both teams notched three power-play goals, with UMD securing a 3-0 lead halfway through the second period and a 5-1 lead by the end of the period. In the first round of the tournament, the Bulldogs defeated the Air Force Academy, 2-1, in overtime to advance to the second round. Last year, Yale was also eliminated from the tournament in the second round just before reaching the Frozen Four.
The Ivy League was well represented at the 2011 NCAA fencing tournament this weekend, as Harvard University freshman Alexandra Kiefer procured the national women's foil title. She is now the eighth League female to earn that title, according to IvyLeagueSports.com. Princeton freshman Eve Levin fell to Kiefer in the final, while Tigers sophomore Eliza Stone took second in the women's saber competition. Among the League teams competing, Princeton had the highest overall finish in fourth place, with 150 points. Harvard, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania trailed in fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively. Dartmouth did not compete.
